to the Holy Scriptures, which proceed from the same Good Spirit that has always been the help and instructor of God's people, and will be so to the end of time.

It is a great comfort to the Christian traveller, when he is helped to believe that Jesus Christ is the Captain of his salvation: and that He is always with those who apply to him in time of trouble.

A Friend and helper so Divine
Does my weak courage raise;
He makes the glorious victory mine
And His shall be the praise!

Faith: Love of God.

Weak cottage, where our souls reside!
This flesh a tottering wall,

With frightful breaches gaping wide,
The building bends to fall.

All round it storms of trouble blow,
And waves of sorrow roll,

Cold showers and wintry storms beat thro':
And pain the tenant soul.

There is a land of pure delight,
Where Saints immortal reign:
Infinite day excludes the night,
And pleasures banish pain.
There, everlasting Spring resides
And never fading flowers:
Death, like a narrow sea, divides

This Heavenly land from ours.

All temptations to evil, both inward and outward, of what sort soever they be, do spring from that power which God will in time bring down and break to pieces, for his seed's sake. And they who abide low, in the lowly seed, shall behold their deliverance with rejoicing, and shall bless the God of their salvation for

ever.

Wait diligently to feel the life of your testimony revealed in your souls, that ye may know the way of God to be still the new and living way. And this will keep you from fainting by reason of the length of time that ye bear the cross, and sufferings and reproach of the Gospel. For when your life and inward consolation is renewed, as well as your exercises and trials, there can be no weariness.

And this keeps out of all formality, which professors fall into, when they have lost the life of their testimony: retaining a formal profession, which stands in words and outward things; which neither pleases God, nor brings comfort to their souls.-S. Crisp's Epistle to Friends.

Outward rites and ceremonies do not com mend us to God: but only faith and love.Luther.

The way to become strong in Christ is, to become weak in ourselves [as to self-will and confidence] and when we are strong in Him, He who is our strength is glorified, and self of no reputation.-Is: Penington.

Let the rule of our obedience be God's requirings, his counsel our delight, and his strength our support: so will his reward be our joy; and our enjoyment of peace with Him here, a reasonable assurance of peace and joy in his presence for ever.

Let us, according to the doctrine of Christ, bear with and gently admonish each other: holding the ground of faith, let us build love upon it.

Let the meditation of our hearts mount higher than wings can reach, [or outward vision penetrate] and while we are engaged in the concerns of this present life, let our love and expectation be fixed on Him who is invisible.

In umbrá desino: a motto for a Sun-dial, [applicable also to the state of the pious soul in seasons of great desertion and poverty of spirit.]

Monica, the mother of Augustine, being likely to die, said to her son, who thought she would wish to have her remains laid near the grave of her late husband, Ponite hoc Corpus ubicun que, nihil vos ejus cura conturbet. And being asked if it did not grieve her to think of dying so far from her own city, she gave this reply; Nihil longè est a Deo, neque timendum est ne Ille agnoscat in fine Sæculi, unde me resuscitet.

It is in vain to think of destroying Christian principles and at the same time preserving Christian practice.

There is a likeness in the spiritual warfare to that which is outward-in which there is no safety for the stragglers, that keep not rank and file. If we forsake the order and duty in
