An ille plus præstat, qui inter cives jus dicit, quam qui docet juventutem quid sit Justitia, quid pietas, quid patientia; quam pretiosum bonum sit bona Conscientia ?

Plato said, he knew not in what a man should be more careful and diligent, than to make a good son.

Officium pii Patris familias est, Liberos et familiam educare ad pietatem, docereque quomodo opera Dei recte debeant considerare.

He that will train up children for God must begin early, before sensitive objects take too deep possession of their hearts, and custom increase the depravity of their nature. No means in the world doth more effectually tend to the happiness of souls than wise and holy education. This dealeth with sin before it bath taken the deepest root, and boweth nature while it is but a twig.-Baxter.

Children have souls to save, and their reason is given them to use for their Creator's service

and their own salvation. They can never begin to learn that too soon, which their whole lives must be employed in practising. Therefore, they that would not have children begin with Divinity, would have them serve the devil and the flesh.

[This is an assertion (sufficiently earnest in manner) of a truth which would have been better stated, by using instead of " Divinity," the terms, their duty to God and man: which of course would include as much of the divine attributes and dispensations as children (I mean those of tender age) may be found capable of rightly comprehending. Otherwise, their "reason" is not used for "their Creator's service and their salvation," but rather enslaved to a form of words, in which it may dwell through life; the man fancying that he has been instructed as a man, when in fact he has been taught rather as a parrot.—Ed.]

A certain writer says, concerning manual labour, and bringing up children to some useful employment:-It preserves the young from sloth, it fills up the vacancies of life, it prevents [much] temptation. It makes them useful in society, it furnishes a resource in case of reduction and distress. It is better to pursue the meanest occupation as a day labourer, than

to live in idleness, a mere cumberer of the ground. Parents! early accustom your children to exertion and difficulties: bring them up idly and delicately, and [unless God interpose his special grace] they are ruined [alike] for this world and the world to come!

Non omnis qui parcit amicus est, nec omnis qui verberat, Inimicus: Meliora sunt vulnera amici quam fraudulenta oscula Inimici. Ne putes te tunc amare filium tuum, quando ei non das Disciplinam; aut tunc amare vicinum tuum, quando eum non corrigis. Non est iste Amor sed Languor: ferveat amor ad emendandum et corrigendum.
