these that will not be moved with the former coming of him, which was in meer Love to Mankind, might be terrified and aftonifhed with the latter, who tho' he defers his coming (as fome think) having leaden Feet, becaufe he expects Amendment, fhall then affuredly find that he hath Iron Hands; who firft came to be a Saviour to all them that believe in him, now comes to be Judge, who will not be blinded nor bribed either with prefent Money, nor yet with future Hope of Reward.

The Sum of Scripture.

To which purpose I have made choice of this Place of Scripture, in which this Matter (as you fee) is at large defcribed, with many neceflary Circumstances, moft needful to be known, and learned of every one of us. here the second coming of Chrift is revealed to St. John in a Vifion from Heaven, even in that manner in which the Lord Jefus himfelf will come at the laft Day. For thefe five Verfs contain in them a lively and heavenly Defcription of the second coming of our Saviour Chrift to Judgment, with all the Circumstances belonging to the fame.

The Parts of the Text.

First, I will fhew you who it was that writ this Book, called the Apocalyps, or the Revela tion of St. John the Evangelift, which our Text now treats on; and then where he writ it. Firft, his Name was John, which Name in the Original fignifies Gracious. Secondly, the Time, when it was written, and that was when

he was banished for the Teflimony of Chrift. Thirdly, the Place where he was exiled and banished to; and that was to an Ifle call'd Parmes, a remote Place, and moft fitting for fo high Contemplation, and the more to be free from worldly Thoughts. Fourthly, by whom he was banished, and that was by the Emperor Domitian, who was then elected by the whole Senate or Council to be their Head. Now this John was a Difciple of Chrift, and one whom he loved, he followed Chrift wherefoever he went: Peter only went with his Mafter to the Judgment-Hall, this John t went with him both to the Judgment-Hall, and alfo to the Crofs, and never left him till he had laid him in his Sepulchre. Upon the Crofs Chrift commended the Care of his Mother unto the Author of thefe Words, which is John, and was in thefe Words exprefled, Behold thy Mother.

This Saint John was one of the three which went always with Chrift, Chrift had but CUE three Difciples with him in the Garden, and this John was one; Chrift had but three Difciples that went with him before Pilate, and this John was one. At the Marriage of Cana in Galilee, there went but three Difciples, and this John was one. This John was he that leaned on Chrift's Breaft at Supper, and it asked him many Queftions, Fehn always juftified himself to be Chrift's Difciple; for in thefe Words he expreffed himself to be of Chrift's Flock, and his Difciple. Brother of yours in Tribulation and Affliction. And fo i have now done with the Explanati on of the Party which wrote thefe Words which now I have read unto you in the Text.

1. The Perfon of the Fudge.

And firft, if you would know with what Majefty, Power, Integrity, Severity and Terror, this great Judge will come, you may fee the Perfon of the Judge defcribed in the firft Verfe of this prefent Text.

Secondly, if you would understand what Perfors must be cited and fummoned, who must appear, St. John faith here, he faw the Dead, both great and small, stand before the Judge: Au that are, that ever have been, or fhall be unto the End of the World, fhall be gathered together, and appear before the Throne of Chrift.

Thirdly, if you defire to be inftructed after what manner Chrift Jefus will proceed in Judgment? What fhl be the Evidences and the Words? What Jury fhall pafs upon every Manend Woman? The Holy Ghoft tells us, that Bock shall be opened, that God will judge overy Ma by his own Confcience; for that d'alve Evidence either for, or against him;
