and Souls of all wicked and ungodly men at the last day which will be fuch as fhall make them cry out unto the rocks and mountains to fall⠀ upon them and cover them, when there fhall be tribulation, anguish and wrath upon every Man that doth evil, Rom. 13.4..

Secondly, The place fhall add likewife to their mifery, and that is Hell, the proper place of the damned after death: This in the Scrip- ture is called Hell, the bottomlefs Gulph, utter darkness, the fearful Tophet, the Dungeon of Def pair, the burning Lake, the hillow Cave, the Chaos of all Confufion, the Grave of Perdition, whofe Furnace is always Burning, whofe Fire is made by God's Wrath, and his Power upholds it, and it is blown with the Bellows of his Ind gnation, it is unquenchable, even prepared for the Devil and his Angels: And therefore Chrift bids them, Go ye. curfed into everlasting fire, &c. and all to fhew the miferable condition of those that are there.

And last of all the Eternity of the Punish ment that the damned fhall fuffer, adds not a little to the mifery of the wicked, they fhall fuffer and endure the heat and burning of God's wrath for ever: It fhall never have an end; It shall be without hope of intermission; for faith St. John, Rev. 14. 1. The fmoak of their Torment shall afcend evermore, and they shall have no reft Day nor Night. What a punishment will this be! Let all Men and Women confider.

First, It is the lots of Almighty God, and of his moft Glorious and Bieffed Prefence, which the Saints and Angels always enjoy, which is

his Love, his Mercy, his Bounty, his Feauty, his gracious Afpects, and all his Eternal Attributes, the lofs of Heaven, which is unspeakable, paft the thoughts of man, the lofs of the Soci ety of the Holy Martyrs, Angels and Arch-Argels, whofe Glory, Riches and Treasures never have an end. Thus I have fhewed you what the fecond death is, and alfo wherein it doth confift.

Now the queftion will be, who fhall be caft into this Lake of Fire? Who are they that fhall die the fecond death, which is fo miferable and woful? For there is no man or woman that liveth, I think, but fuppofe that they fhall efcape this death, they hope they fhall be faved, and fo escape this Flaming Fire; and by that hope, defer their Repentance till old Age, till they have no other employment. And therefore now you fhall fee who they are that fhall be caft into it. There are fome marked out unto us, Rev. 21. 8. The fearful and unbelievers, and Abominable, and Murtherers, and Whoremongers, and Sorcerers, and Liars, &c. fhall have their part in the Lake that burneth with fire and brimstone, which is the fecond Death. So then the Holy Ghoft tells us that all impenitent finners fhall be damned, and caft into this Lake of Fire which is the fecond death; for after this there is no Repentance, no recovery, there will be a great Gulf, as Abraham told Dives, between the Godly and Ungodly: The Godly fhall fee and behold the Ungodly in Hell, as Lazarus did Dives in Hell- Tornients. Then how strange is this? The Holy Ghost

tells

tells us who fhall be damned and caft into the Lake of Fire, all impenitent finners, the Blafphemer, the Drunkard, c. and yet no man (almost) will confider this: Well, the Spirit of God cannot.lie: He faith, That all wicked and ungodly finners fhall be cast into the Lake of Fire which is the fecond Death. Now tell a wicked wretch of his fin, as his Swearing, &c. and what will he fay, Tufh, God is merciful, I hope I fhall be faved: Is not this, I pray, to give the Holy Ghoft the lye? Tell the Drunkard or the Prophaner of the Lords day, that they muft one day give an account for it, or that they fhall be damned; do they believe this; Oh, no, no, for if they did, how durft they be fo bold to live in fin: Well, let thefe vile wretches that fay they hope to be faved as well as the beft; yet know that this is the truth of God, the Holy Ghoft tells us plainly, That all Unbelievers, and Thieves, and Murtherers, &c. fhall be cast into the Lake of Fire and Brimstone; which is the fecond Death.

But those whofe hearts tremble for fear of thefe things, whofe Souls do melt for fear of this fecond Death, if you would know how to escape this terrible Lake of Fire, and how to avoid this the fecond death, which is eternal damnation and torment both of Body and Soul, you fhall fee how the Spirit of God doth not only fhew you how to escape Hell, but to come to Heaven, not only to avoid damnation in this Lake of Fire, but to obtain Salvation and Joy in the Blefled and Glorious prefence of

God

God for evermore. Now mind what the Holy Ghost teacheth in the 6th verfe of this Chapter, Bleffed and happy is he that hath his part in the first Refurrection, for on fuch the second death fhall have no power; but they shall be the Priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a Thousand Years, that is for evermore.

Now, would you know what manner of men and women fhall efcape this fecond death and eternal damnation in this Lake of HellFire, the Holy Ghoft faith, they and none but they that have their parts in the first Refur rection. So it is manifeft in thefe words, that there are two Refurrections and alfo a double death: The Children of God have a double Refurrection and one death, but all wicked and ungodly finners have one Refurrection and a double death. Now let us fee what is meant by this first Refurrection, namely our rifing out of the grave of fin to newness of Life: This is the first Refurrection, Ton hath be quickened, who are dead in Trefpaffes and Sins, Eph. 2.1. Therefore we are buried with Chrift in Baptifm, into death that like as Chrift was raifed from the Dead by the Glery of the Father, even fo we alfo fhould walk in newness of Life. Rom. 6. 4.

Now, would you know whether you shall efcape eternal Fire in Hell, even this fecond Death? then look into your own Souls; Are you quickened in the inner Man? Do you hate fin as much when it is committed by your self, as by others? Do you labour to mortify and keep under the works of the Flesh and walk in all

holy

holy Duties of Obedience, both to God and Man? Remember what is faid, There is no condemnation to them that are in Chrift, which walk not after the Flesh, but after the Spirit.

Bleffed and Happy are they that have part in the first Refurrection: Rom. 8. Where he shews that none fhall be bleffed, none fhall have part in the first Resurrection, and be freed from the fecond Death, but fuch as are Sanctified and live a Godly Life. Therefore if you defire to be bleffed, and efcape the fecond death, which is everlasting damnation both of Body and Soul, then labour to live a Godly Life here, for thefe two, Juftification and Sanctification cannot be fevered.

And this is a very great Comfort to all the true Members of Chrift, that repent and forfake their fins and strive to conquer their unruly paffions, bearing patiently what wicked men lay upon them, and strive to live a Godly Life: tho' they are in Mifery, Poverty, or Want, and in the end die the first Death of the Body; yet they fhall be freed from the fecond Death, that is from eternal Death. The Gates of Hell fhall not prevail against them. And therefore as you love your Souls, as you defire to be blessed, and to escape eternal Damnation, which is the fecond death; Labour to have a part in the firft Refurrection, to die to fin before you die to Nature, and to live in newness of Life.

But as for wicked and ungodly finners, that live in fin, delight in fin, and that have no part in the first Resurrection their cafe is woful,
