mitted, P. 50. 21. Thefe things haft thou done, c. By the Pain and Horror they fuffer and undergo. Tribulation, anguish and forrow shall be upon every one that doth evil, Rom. 2. 9. By the Companions the Wicked fhall have af er this Life, Mat, 25, 41. Even the Devil and his Angels, &c.

Ver. 11. And I saw the dead both great and small.

Hus you have heard the Perfon of the Judge

defcrib'd by his wonderful Majefty and Power, wherewith he will come to Judgment; and alfo by the great Severity and Terror that fhall aftonish both Heaven and Earth, and make them to fly before his Prefence.

Now in this Verfe, and that which followeth, is declared, who they be that shall appear before this great Judge, namely, I saw the dead both great and small, &c.

Secondly, The Evidences that fhall be brought in, and that Witnesses fhall be produced either to excufe or accufe, in these Words, And the Books were opened, &C.

The Perfons that shall appear in Fudgment. And I faw the dead both great and small, &c. Before we come to speak of the Words, here a Question may arife, namely, How this can be true that St. John faith, He faw the dead both great and Small; for we believe, that Jefus Christ shall judge both the Quick and Dead, not only the Dead but the Living. And Paul faith, We shall not die but be changed, they that be living abi coming: Then how doth this place agree with them,

feeing St. John faith here, He faw the dead. Here is none spoken of but the Dead, no mention of the Living.

I anfwer, St. John faith, That he saw the dead: Not that he faw not the Living too; for he faw (no doubt) both Quick and Dead stand before God,but he fpeaketh here only of thofe of whom there might be fome doubt. For if the dead, and they which have been rotten for many thousand Years fhall appear, and ftand before God; how can we think, that any of the Living fhall be wanting? If they which have been dead for fix thousand Years, and turned to Ashes, fhall be brought to Judgment, then (no doubt) they which be found living when Christ shall come to Judgment, fhall appear before him likewife. So then it is evident, that although St. John fpeaketh here only of the Dead, becaufe there might be most doubt of them: Yet he faw in a Vision all Men both quick and dean, stand and appear before the Judge and before his Throne.

I faw the dead, &c.

Doct. 4. Men shall be raised out of the duft at laft.

HE Inftruction we are hence to learn, is,

that the Bodies of Men, how foever turned to Duft and Ashes, fhall one Day be quickned, and raifed up to Life again.

This is confefled by Hannab in her Song, 1 Sam. 2. 6. The Lord killeth and maketh alive, bringeth down to the grave, and raifeth up I am fure (laith Fob) that my Redeemer liveth, and

that

that I shall ftand the last day on the earth; and tho' worms destroy my body, yet I shall fee God in my flesh, Job 19. 25. So Efay, the dead shall arife, a wake and fing ye that dwell in the earth, If. 26. 19. So likewife you may read in the 37 of Ezekiel, (which I pray you read at leifure) how the Lord caufed the Graves to open, and the Bones to come together, and live: So that we fee that the dead Bodies of God's Children do not perish, they are not caft away and loft when they die, but they fhall rife again; they fhall be purified, made glorious Bodies, and fhall ftand in Chrift's Prefence and see his Glory.

We must not think the Antiquity of long lying in the Grave, can fhelter us from the Refurrection, which will be common and general. 'Tis not like an earthly Tryal, it is not the Stubble fhall hide Saul, nor the Ground hide Achan's Sin: Cain fhall rife with Abel Face to Face; Hered with John the Baptift, Felix with Paul, Mofes with Pharoah; and then who can deny that he hath done wickedly? Our Consciences will accufe us, which we carry daily about us: The Gentiles fhall rise up against the Jews; the Heavens fhall bear witness againft us for our cold Prayers, and the Creatures of the Earth for our rebellious Thoughts, and then our Confciences fhall justify this to be true; then Woe and Sorrow,and Wringing of Hands,and no comfort can be afforded us, then would we give all that we were ever worth, to have but a Months time, or but a Weeks time, nay, but a Day or Hours time or space, to repent;

to make our Reconciliation with God, whom we have fo offended.

And therefore let us not think that when Death cometh and feparateth the Soul from the Body, that then the Body doth perish, and is caft away, no, no, ir fhall rise again, it is but laid in the Grave, as in a fure Chest, and there is at Eafe, and lyeth afleep, as on a Bed of Down: But when Chrift Jefus fhall come to Judgment it fhali rife again: For we must know, that every true Believer is made a Mem ber of Chrift, and not only our Souls are united to Chrift, but even our dead Bodies, when they be laid in the Grave, they shall still remain the dear Members of his Myftical Body, and therefore fhall not perish, but rife again to Glory. And for our further Confirmation in this Point of the Refurrection, let us fee how it is confirm'd to us by Teftimonies of holy Scripture, as that of Daniel, They that feep in the Duft Shall awake, fome to everlasting Life, and fome to everlafting Shame, Dan. 12. 2.

I

And the Lord God by the Prophet Hofea doth make unto his Church this gracious Promife, Hof. 13. 14. I will redeem thee from the Power of the Grave, I will deliver thee from Death: 0 Death, I will be thy Death, O Grave, will be thy Destruction. This is clear'd by the Teftimony of Jefus Chrift himself, John 5. 28, 29: The Hour fhall come, in the which all that are in the Graves fhall hear his Voice, and they shall come forth; and they which have done Good fhall go unto the Refurrection of Life, and they that have

done

done Evil unto the Refurrection of Condemnation. This is taught by the Apostles of Jefus Chrift in divers places of their Epifiles, as i Cor.15.51. Behold I fhew you a Myfery, we shall not all fleep, but we shall all be changed, and that in the twinkling of an Eye, at the Sound of the last Trumpet: And fo forwards in the fame Chapter you may read, which will give you Satisfaction about the Refurrection of the Dead. And as St. Paul further fpeaks, faying, As by Sin came Death, and fo by Death comes Life. Likewife St. Auftin faith, he that liveth well cannot be afraid to die, nor doubtful of his Refurrection. And this is that which all of us confefs and believe, as one of the most principal Articles of our Faith, the Refurrection of the Dead. So that we may fee it clear that the Godly and the Wicked fhall both arife, but the Ends of their Refurre&ion are different, the one fhall rise to Life Eternal, the other to perpetual Shame and eternal Deftruction; fo that howsoever it fhall be a joyful Day to the Godly, that have the Sting of Death taken away from them through Chrift's Death, yet the Wicked fhall have no Benefit by it, and therefore to them it cannot properly be call'd a Refurre&tion, no more than the taking of a Malefactor out of Prison to be Executed can be call'd a Delivery. But it shall be with the Godly and Wicked at that Day as it was with Pharaoh's Servants, Gen. 40. both of them were taken out of Prifon, one of them to be reftor'd to his Office, to minifter before the King, but the other to be Executed and put
