Holy Living and Dying.

I. Directions baw to live Well.

N the Morning awake with God, and before all other things Offer up unto him thy Morning Sacrifice of Prayer, wherein remember, First, to give hearty Thanks unto him for all his Mercies Bodily and Spiritual; and namely, for thy late Prefervation. Secondly,Make an hum ble Confeffion of thy Sins, with an earnest desire of Pardon. Thirdly, Ask fuch Neceffaries as are requifite for thy Soul and Body, with fervent Request to be relieved in them; and namely, defire his Bleffing upon thy Labours in thy Calling, in the day to come.

In what place foever thou art, let this Per fuafion abide in thy Heart, That thou art be fore the Living God; and let the Remembrance hereof ftrike thine Heart with Awe and Reverence, and make thee afraid to Sin.

Make Confcience of Idle,Vain, Dishoneft,and Ungodly Thoughts; for thefe are the Seeds and Beginnings of Actual Sin, in Word and Deed.

Have a fpecial Care to avoid thofe Sins which thou fiadeft thy Nature moft prone unto, and efchew thofe Provocations which were wont to prevail against thee.

Follow with Faithfulness and Diligence thy Lawful particular Calling in which thou art. Placed.

Think evermore thy prefent Eftate and Condition to be the belt Eftate for thee,what foever it be, because of the good Providence of God.

Look

Look well to thy Carriage in Company, that thou do no hurt, by Word or Example; nor take any thing from others, but endeavour rather to do good.

Ufe civil Honefty towards all Men: A good Confcience and good Manners go together.

If at any time, against thy Purpofe, thou art overtakin with any Sin, lie not in it, but speedily recover thy felf by Repentance.

When any good Motion or Affection doth arife in thine Heart,fuffer it not to pass away,bot feed it by Reading, Meditati g, or Praying.

Efteem of every prefent Day, as of the Day of thy Death; and therefore live now, even as though thou wert now Dying; and do those good Duties every Day, which thou wouldeft d if this were thy Dying Day.

At the end of the Day, before thou lie down, in thy Bed, call to mind how thou haft spent the Day that ispaffed: Thy Mifdoings Repent, and praife God for affifting thee with his Grace in the Duties which thou haft performed.

Sleep not at Night, before thou haft commended thy felf by Prayer into the Hands of God; for thou knoweft not whether (fall'n af.ep) thou shalt rife again alive.

Let Prayer be the Key to open the Morning, and the Bar to fhut in the Evening. Walk as the Children of Light.

As the Juft live by Faith, fo the Juft live the Life of Faith. Now they that live the Life of Grace, one Day hall live the Life of Glory.

II. Directions how to Die well

Hink that the greateft Work thou haft to do in this World, is to Die well, and to make an happy Departure out of this World. They which Die well, Die not to Die, but to Live Eternally.

Be every Day ready to leave this Life. That Man doth finish his Days in belt fort, that eve ry Day esteemeth the laft Day of his Life to be prefent and at hand.

Endeavour before Death come upon thee to pull our his Sting,and take from him his Power and Strength, by humbling thy felf in the time prefent for all thy Sins paft,and by turning thy felf unto God for the time to come. That Man can never Die ill, that hath a Care to live well.

Innure thy felf by little and little to Die, before thou come to that Point that thou must needs Die. He that leaves the World before the World leaves him, gives Death the Hand like a welcome Meffenger, and departs in Peace.

Chiefly when thou art vifited with Sickness,

or Old Age, think either of theth Sickness,

Warning thee e're long to appear before the Great Lord, Judge of all the World: Therefore now prepare to fet all things in good order, and make thine Accounts ready.

Make a new Examination of thy felf, and Converfation paffed. Make a new Confeffion unto God of thy new and particular Sins: As God fendeth new Corrections and Chaftifemenis, makes new Prayers, and more earnest than ever before, for Pardon of thy Sins, and

Reconciliation with God in Chrift; by all means avoid thofe Sins which thou findeft and fceleft encreafe the Wrath of God against thee.

Seek Reconciliation with thy, Neighbour, by free forgivenefs of them that have offended thee, and earne ftly defire to be forgiven of all that have been offended by thee. Set thine Houfe and Family in order, by difpofing of thy worldly Goods in thy Will and Teftament; thereby thou fhalt Die not the more quickly, but the more quietly, and prevent the Brawls and Jars, that otherwife (when thou art gone) may arife from thine Heits. Thou parteft with earthly Poffeffions, and art going to take Poff ffion of Heavenly.

In the lift Agony of Death, when all things in and of the World do fail and forfake thee, reft thy felf by Faith on the Favour and Mercy of God in Chrift, and Comfort thy felf in the Lord thy God. What fhall feparate from the Love of God in Chrift? Not Life nor Death.

Let thine Heart and Tongue be ftill em. ployed in Prayer to the Lord: Fift, for Patience in thy Trouble. Secondly, For Comfort in thine Affliction. Thirdly, For Strength in Weakness. Fourthly, For Deliverance at his Pleasure, Yea, endeavour to Die Praying. When thou art in the depth of Miseries, and at the Gates of Death, there is a depth of God's Mercy, which is ready to hear and help thee. Mifery muft Call upon Mercy.

Be willing and ready to depart out of this World without murmuring or repining, when
