NEW ENGLAND AUTOMOBILE UNDERWRITERS' CONFERENCE. Organized 1916. The officers are: President, W. R. Hedge, Boston; vice-president, G. H. Tryon, National Fire; secretary and treasurer, C. S. Timberlake, Hartford Fire.

NEW ENGLAND BUREAU OF UNITED INSPECTION. The New England Bureau of United Inspection was organized at Boston in December, 1887, for the purpose of making frequent and complete surveys of important risks in New England, the reports to be furnished to subscribing companies. The bureau is in charge of a governing committee of nine, the list being elected annually.

At the annual election held in Boston in February, 1918, the fol lowing officers were elected to serve for the ensuing year: Charles Haas, chairman; H. Belden Sly, vice-chairman; Clifford H. Rice, treasurer; Edward A. Northey, clerk and manager. The governing committee elected comprises, Charles Haas, Clifford H. Rice, H. Belden Sly, W. H. Winkley, F. E. Dunham, Walter Adlard, F. A. Nutt, John J. Lovett, Geo. H. Allen.

The inspectors of the Bureau made inspections during the year to the number of 4,455 and found 3,126 defects, divided as follows: Under construction, 245; in hazards, 160; administration and special features, 277; electrical equipment, 226; fire protection, 1,474; sprinkler systems, 744; which were corrected. Tests of fire apparatus and sprinkler systems to the number of 3,958 were also made during the

year.

NEW ENGLAND INSURANCE EXCHANGE was organized by special agents of fire insurance companies at Boston, January 6, 1883. Prior to this anything like order or cohesion in rates in New
