NOTICES OF THE PRESS.

From the Independent.

It is the ablest statement of the views of his school in this generation. It will take rank with Henry More, Samuel Clark, Jonathan Edwards, Hobbes, Hamilton, and others, who "reason high of providence, foreknowledge, will, and fate." Into this rare few, on their rarified heights, will he rise.

From the New Englander.

Our object is simply to call the attention of our clerical and other readers to a work of marked ability, which will task their energies, and reward their study in a field of discussion which can never be outworn or exhausted to the lover of speculative discussion, or of moral or religious truth.

From the Freewill Baptist Quarterly Review.

The clearest, ablest, fullest, and most satisfactory discussion of this great and fundamental topic to be found in the same compass, or indeed to be found in the work of any single writer, however voluminous.

From the Princeton Review.

His book contains one of the most ardent and searching discussions of the subject that has yet appeared. Bold, adventurous, inventive, eager, he threads every argument of his adversaries, presses on with burning zeal, and stops not till he appears to himself to have demolished all opposing theories, and completely worsted their supporters. Dr. Whedon is in his way a strong man. He betrays a force of intellect, an earnestness of conviction, and energy of will, which eminently fit him to lead other minds, and quite explain his polemical primacy in his communion. From the Philadelphia Daily News.

A masterpiece upon the side it advocates.

From the New York Evening Post.

The author has displayed great ingenuity in disposing of the predestinarian question, and the chapters in which the doctrine of freedom is set forth are unanswerable. The work has undergone a wide popularity, and will continue to be in demand.

From the Buffalo Express.

The treatise is one of profound ability and learning, and will long hold its authoritative rank on the side of the great controversy which it represents.

From the Springfield Republican.

Rev. Dr. Whedon, the recognized exponent of Methodism in this age and nation, has given the religious public a somewhat bulky treatise on the Freedom of the Will. The work is ably written, thoroughly argumentative in its treatment, and mainly aimed at the school of Edwards in his own day, and the Princeton theology in ours.

Treats the subject with a since the days of Edwards,

From the Morning Star.

fullness and ability that have been scarcely equaled with whom he takes issue.

From the Ladies' Repository.

The author has carried us further back into the mysterious workings of the human soul than we were ever led before, and in doing so he solves the problem of the freedom of the human will by showing us how it is free, and wherein its freedom consists. Coleridge, Sir William Hamilton, and M'Cosh evidently saw the ground on which Dr. Whedon stands, but either were unable to express and define it, or were unwilling boldly to stand upon it.

From the Methodist.

A work which ought to excite universal interest in the sphere to which it belongs. He has laid the religion of Christendom, and the common sense of mankind, under the weightiest obligations.

From the Western Christian Advocate.

A great book, not on account of its great size, but because it embodies great thinking. While the subject, with its indefinite ramifications, is not new, the book is, to a degree that does not hold good once in a thousand, original.

And at numerous Institutes and County Fairs, including all the Fairs at which they were exhibited the past three years.

The GROVER & BAKER ELASTIC STITCH SEWING MACHINE is superior to all others, for the following reasons:

1. The seam is stronger and more clastic than any other.

2. It is more easily managed, and is capable of doing a greater variety and range of work than any other.

3. It is capable of doing all the varieties of sewing done by other machines, and, in addition, executes beautiful embroidery and ornamental work.

The Grover & Baker S. M, Co. manufacture, in addition to their celebrated GROVER & BAKER STITCH Machines, the most perfect SHUTTLE, or "LOCK STITCH" Machines in the market, and afford purchasers the opportunity of selecting after trial and examination of both, the one best suited to their wants. Other Companies manufacture but ene kind of machine each, and can not afford this opportunity of selection to their customers.

A pamphlet containing samples of both the Grover & Baker Stitch and Shuttle Stitch in various fabrics, with full explanations, diagrams, and illustrations, to enable purchasers to examine, test and compare their relative merits, will be furnished. on request, at our offices throughout the country. Those who desire machines that do the best work should not fail to send for this pamphlet, and test and compare these stitches for themselves.
