path of duty. I write disinterestedly, as probably I do not spend five shillings a-year in any kind of alcholic drinks. I have the honour to be, Sir, your very obedient servant,

"A CLERGYMAN, AND REGULAR READER OF YOUR PERIODICAL." We cannot re-open our pages to a discussion so well worn as that of the Temperance Pledge: and therefore abstain from making any remarks which might seem unfair to those who differ from us, and who are not able to reply. The pamphlet enclosed is “A Lecture on Temperance Societies, reprinted and abridged from the lectures of Bishop Hopkins, of Vermont, United States." No publisher's name is given, but it deserves attention. Bishop Hopkins lays down and endeavours to prove the following propositions :

-

"That the Temperance Society is not based on religious, but on worldly principles. That it opposes vice, and attempts to establish virtue, in a manner which is not in accordance with the word of God.

"That if it should succeed it would be a triumph of infidelity.

"That it gives a false prominence to one particular vice, contrary to the doctrines of the bible.

"That calling it an introduction or a preparation for religion, is at war with the principles of the gospel.

"That it cannot be relied on as a remedy against vice, for which the religion of Christ is the only cure; and that the good effected by it, whatever it may be, cannot justify the Christian in trying experiments to reform mankind on any other principles than those which are set forth in the Scriptures."

We are also favoured with a sheet bearing the title "The Church of England and Total Abstinence; being a supplement to the Weekly Record. One half-penny each." It contains the "Address" alluded to by our correspondent, headed by the honored name of Dean Close. Of the address, for the reason we have already given, we say nothing; except that we are humble labourers in the same cause, though not exactly in the same way, and feel as deeply convinced as any of the subscribers that drunkenness is the curse, and if not arrested will be the utter ruin, of England. But we are sure our Rev. brethren will feel with us that they owe no thanks to the Editor of the half-penny broad sheet who can parade their signatures with such a flourish (or "braying " ?) of trumpets as this?—

“These clergymen all are centres of thought and feeling, and their influence extends far and near. They have come to the conclusion, in spite of the force of association-in spite of the chains of custom and habit-in spite of the sneer and laugh of the bigot or the fool, that moderate drinking is a delusion and a snare, that intemperance is Britain's curse and shame, and that it becomes them publicly to lift up their voices on behalf of total abstinence. We thank them from our very hearts for this."
