1. JESUS, Thou Man of sorrows, born

To suffering here below,
To toil through poverty and scorn,

Through weakness, and through woe :2. Immanuel ! who, by every grief,

By each temptation tried,
Hast lived to yield our wants relief,

And, to redeem us, died !
3. If, gaily clothed, and proudly fed,

In careless ease we dwell;
Remind us of Thy manger-bed,

And lowly cottage-cell.
4. If, press’d by penury severe,

In envious want we pine,
May conscience whisper in our ear,

A poorer lot was thine.
5. From all the viewless snares of sin,

Preserve us firm and free;
As Thou, like us, hast tempted been,

May we rejoice with Thee. BISHOP HEBER.

1. THERE is a fountain fill'd with blood,

Drawn from Immanuel's veins,
And sinners plung'd beneath that flood,

Lose all their guilty stains. 2. The dying thief rejoic'd to see

That fountain in his day ;
Oh, may I there, though vile as he,

Wash all my sins away.
3. Blest dying Lamb! Thy precious blood

Shall never lose its power,
Till all the ransom'd church of God

Be sav'd to sin no more.
4. E'er since by faith I saw the stream

Thy flowing wounds supply,
Redeeming love has been my theme,

And shall be till I die.
5. But when this lisping, falt'ring tongue

Lies silent in the grave,
Then, in a nobler sweeter song,
I'll sing Thy power to save !

COWPER.

1. FATHER of mercies, in Thy Word

What endless glory shines ! For ever be Thy name adored

For these celestial lines.

2. Here may the wretched sons of want

Exhaustless riches find;
Riches above what earth can grant,

And lasting as the mind.
3. Here the Redeemer's welcome voice

Spreads heavenly peace around; And life and everlasting joys

Attend the blissful sound.

4. Divine Instructor, gracious Lord,

Be Thou for ever near;
Teach us to love Thy sacred Word,

And view our Saviour there.

MRS. STEELE.

1. LORD of the harvest ! God of grace !

Send down Thy heavenly rain ; In vain we plant without Thine aid,

And water too in vain.

2. May no vain thoughts, those birds of prey,

Defraud us of our gain ;
Nor anxious cares, those baneful thorns,

Choke up the precious grain.
3. Ne'er may our hearts be like the rock,

Where but the blade can spring;
Which scorch'd with heat becomes, by noon,

A dead, a useless thing.
4. Let not the joys Thy Gospel gives

A transient rapture prove;
Nor may the world by smiles and frowns

Our faith and hope remove.
5. But may our hearts, like fertile soil,

Receive the heavenly word;
So shall our fair and ripened fruits

Their hundred-fold afford.

1. GOD moves in a mysterious way

His wonders to perform;
He plants His footsteps in the sea,

And rides upon the storm. 2. Deep in unfathomable mines

Of never-failing skill,
He treasures up His bright designs,

And works His sovereign will.
3. Ye fearful saints, fresh courage take;

The clouds ye so much dread
Are big with mercy, and shall break

In blessings on your head.
4. Judge not the Lord by feeble sense,

But trust Him for His grace;
Behind a frowning providence

He hides a smiling face.
5. His purposes will ripen fast,

Unfolding every hour;
The bud may have a bitter taste,

But sweet will be the flower. 6. Blind unbelief is sure to err,

And scan His work in vain;
God is His own interpreter,

And He will make it plain.

CowPER.

1. Oh, for a thousand tongues to sing

The great Redeemer's praise,
The glories of our God and King,

The triumphs of His grace.
2. He breaks the power of death and sin,

He sets the captive free;
His blood, which makes the sinner clean,

Is all the sinner's plea.
3. He speaks, and at His pow'rful voice

New life the dead receive;
The broken hearts again rejoice;

The humble poor believe.
4. Lord of our life! all gracious God !

Thy goodness we'll proclaim;
Declare Thy wond'rous acts abroad,

And bless our Saviour's name. OLIVER.
