1. FROM Greenland's icy mountains,

From India's coral strand,
Where Afric's sunny fountains

Roll down their golden sand ;
From many an ancient river,

From many a palmy plain,
They call us to deliver

Their land from error's chain.
2. What though the spicy breezes

Blow soft o'er Java’s isle ;
Though every prospect pleases,

And only man is vile ?
In vain, with lavish kindness,

The gifts of God are strewn ;
The heathen, in his blindness,

Bows down to wood and stone.

3. Shall we, whose souls are lighted

With wisdom from on high,
Shall we, to men benighted,

The lamp of life deny ?
Salvation ! O salvation !

The joyful sound proclaim,
Till each remotest nation

Has learnt Messiah's name.

4. Waft, waft, ye winds, His story,

And you, ye waters, roll,
Till, like a sea of glory,

It spreads from pole to pole :
Till o'er our ransom'd nature,

The Lamb, for sinners slain,
Redeemer, King, Creator,

In bliss returns to reign.

Bp. HEBER.

1. Awake, my soul, and with the sun

Thy daily stage of duty run:
Shake off dull sloth, and early rise

To pay thy morning sacrifice.
2. Thy precious time mispent, redeem;

Each present day, thy last esteem;
Improve thy talent with dve care;

For the great day thyself prepare. 3. In conversation be sincere;

Keep conscience, as the noon-tide, clear;
Think how the all-seeing God thy ways,

And all thy secret thoughts, surveys. 4. Wake, and lift up thyself, my heart,

And with the angels bear thy part;
Who all night long, unwearied sing

High praise to the Eternal King. 5. Awake, awake, ye heavenly choir;

May your devotion me inspire,
That I, like you, my age may spend,

Like you, may on my God attend. 6. May I, like you, in God delight,

Have all day long my God in sight;
Perform, like you, my Maker's will-
0
may

I never more do ill!
7. Lord, I my vows to Thee renew;

Scatter my sins as morning dew;
Guard my first springs of thought and will,

And with Thyself my spirit fill. 8. Direct, control, suggest, this day,

All I design, or do, or say ;
That all my powers, with all their might,

In Thy sole glory may unite. 9. Praise God, from whom all blessings flow,

Praise Him all creatures here below;
Praise Him above, ye heavenly host,
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

1. Glory to Thee, my God, this night,

For all the blessings of the light:
Keep me, o keep me, King of kings,
Under Thy own Almighty wings.

2. Forgive me, Lord, for Thy dear son,

The ills that I this day have done;
That with the world, myself, and Thee,
I, ere I sleep, at peace may be.

3. Teach me to live, that I may dread

The grave as little as my bed ;
To die, that this vile body may
Rise glorious at the awful day.

4. O may my soul on Thee repose,

And may sweet sleep mine eye-lids close ;
Sleep that may me more vigorous make,
To serve my God when I awake.

5. When in the night I sleepless lie,

My soul with heav'nly thoughts supply;
Let no ill dreams disturb my rest,
No powers of darkness me molest.

6. O may Thine angel, while I sleep,

Close to my bed his vigils keep;
His love angelical instil,
Stop all the avenues of ill.

7. May He celestial joy rehearse,

And thought to thought with me converse;
Or, in my stead, all the night long,
Sing to my God a grateful song.

8. Praise God, from whom all blessings flow.

Praise Him all creatures here below;
Praise Him above, ye heavenly host,
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

Bp. KENN.
