The magnets cannot get out of place, or rust, as they are enclosed in sealed brass casings, and securely locked in position. The movement of magnets, when adjusting, is controlled from the outside of Binnacle, by means of a small crank key; this enables the adjuster to watch the compass while he is altering the position of magnets, and to move them the exact amount desired; thus avoiding the annoyance and time lost in waiting for the compass to "settle", which is necessary in all other makes of Compensating Binnacles in which the magnets are shifted in and out of holes in the base, or moved up and down on racks with fixed holes. After adjustment is finished, a record may be taken of the position of each magnet, as shown by a scale inside the Binnacle, and the record may be kept by the master for future refer ence; the adjusting key is then removed and the casing locked, making it impossible for any one to tamper with the magnets. Our Binnacle also allows of closer adjustment than any other, as in it the position of magnets may be altered to a fraction of an inch when desired, which is impossible with Binnacles having holes in the base, or fixed racks for the magnets. Our system of adjustment is fully protected by patents and can be used by no other maker. The Binnacle is constructed in the most substantial manner, of the best material; the body is of well finished mahogany, mounted on a polished brass base; the hood is of strong brass, with two doors, front and back, to allow a bearing to be taken without removing hood; lift lamps; blinder; flinders bar; quadrantal correctors; and all magnets necessary for correction of largest errors.
