PREFACE.

THE object of this work is to supply a guide to the picturesque scenery of Scotland, on as concise and simplified a plan as is consistent with accuracy and distinctness.

For this purpose, delineations of the principal routes have been constructed and engraved on a new plan— every place of interest forms the leading word of a new paragraph, so that it immediately comes under the eye of the reader and the descriptions contain simply the facts and directions necessary to the Tourist, all unimportant details being carefully avoided.

Besides descriptions of the most picturesque scenery, an Itinerary of the leading post-roads throughout the country has been added; and, although some inaccuracies may have escaped attention, yet, as a security for the general correctness of the whole, it may be stated, that, with a very few exceptions, the routes and descriptions are from actual experience and observation.

EDINBURGH, 5th June 1837.
