Excerpt from Dublin Explorations and Reflections

It was, I feel sure, with all the emotions of the explorer that I took my ticket for Dublin, pleased to be going to such a savage spot with out a revolver and armed only with sympathy and a curiosity which grew to fever pitch as the train hurried northwards and westwards through the sleeping countryside. The train was filled almost entirely with soldiers; there could not have been more than a dozen civilians on board. The men in my compart ment, after going through the soldier's charm ing ritual Of making friends - handing Wood bines to one another, exchanging comics, and so on - soon began the inevitable discus sion about scandals which seems to start whenever soldiers get together. They all gave their opinions as to what Should be done when the war was over. TO judge from their tone, the flight Of the entire Cabinet to America on the Day of Reckoning would (from the Cabinet's point Of view) be an advisable course If you ask me, 'said the sergeant.
