Spirit of truth and love,

Life-giving Holy Dove,

Speed forth thy flight;
Move on the water's face,
Bearing the lamp of grace,

[ocr errors]

And in earth's darkest place let there be light!"

4

Blessed and Holy Three,
Glorious Trinity,

Wisdom, Love, Might!

Boundless as ocean's tide

Rolling in fullest pride,

Through the world far & wide" let there be light!"

54. SABBATH. Is. lviii. 13. (Sicilian.)

1 Day of seven! first and dearest,
Thou the mourner's calm retreat,
Bearing those that love thee nearest
To the Saviour's mercy seat.

2 Day of worship! let me call thee
Holy, consecrated, blest,
O whate'er in life befall me,
In thy stillness may I rest.

3 Day of mercy! be thou ever
Honorable to our Lord,

Rich in offerings to the giver

Of Salvation's precious word.

4 Day of blessings! may my spirit
Find thee ever a delight,

While I plead my Saviour's merit,
And implore his conquering might.

5 Day of Glory! from earth's pleasure,
While thou shinest, let me cease,
Till thou art my joy, my treasure,
Foretaste of eternal peace.

55.

SABBATH. (Rockingham.)

1 Bless God, my soul, whose boundless love
Recalls thy thoughts to things above:
Thy hymns of praise should heav'nward rise,
Like the sweet evening sacrifice.

2 This day the Lord of life arose,
And triumphed o'er his mighty foes:
He closed the gates of death and hell,
And opened heaven where angels dwell.

3 Angels in heaven and saints on earth
Unite this day in holy mirth;
I'll join the happy choir and raise
The feeble tribute of my praise.

4 Glory to Thee by whom I'm blessed
With this return of hallowed rest:
Life, peace, and mercy spring from Thee,
And Thou dost give them all to me.

56.

SABBATH. (Low-Harrogate.)

1 On each return of holy rest,

The day my heavenly Father blest,
O let my happy portion be

To find supreme delight in Thee,

In Thee, my God, in Thee.

2 Those precious hours I would improve
In fervent prayer, in sacred love,
From earth's polluting pleasures free
To find my every joy in Thee,

In Thee, my God, in Thee.

3 The pilgrim's toil I needs must share,
And sin's oppressive burden bear,
But on the Sabbath, Lord, I'll flee
To find a happy peace in Thee,

In Thee, my God, in Thee.

4 When gospel messages I hear,
O may the Holy Dove be near
To seal thy promises to me,
And give new confidence in Thee,

In Thee, my God in Thee.

57.

SABBATH. (Low-Harrogate.)

1 When humbly kneeling at thy throne,
With deep distress my guilt I own,
Then let my contrite spirit see
Enough of pardoning grace in Thee,
In Thee, my God, in Thee.

2 When in thy temple I adore,

And truth's exhaustless mines explore,
Or, trembling, praise the One in Three,
Fresh glories let me view in Thee

In Thee, my God, in Thee.

3 When to thy table, I repair
Be Thon my Saviour with me there;
Fix my whole heart on Calvary
Until my soul is lost in Thee,

In Thee, my God, in Thee.

4 Thus on each day of holy rest
May I with fruits of joy be blessed,
Till, in a bright eternity,

I have my perfect bliss in Thee,

In Thee, my God, in Thee.

[blocks in formation]

1 Awake my soul, and with the sun
Thy daily stage of duty run;
Shake off dull sloth and early rise
To pay thy morning sacrifice.

2 Wake and lift up thyself my heart,
And with the angels bear thy part,
Who all night long nnwearied sing
High glory to the eternal King.

3 Lord I my vows to Thee renew,
Scatter my sins as morning dew;
Guard my first springs of thought and will,
And with Thyself my spirit fill.

59.

MORNING. (Windle.)

1 To God, my soul, thy praise address,
His daily gifts are numberless :
Behold the sun's returning ray
Has turned the darkness into day.

2 Thus did the Sun of life dispel
The cheerless night of death and hell;
And thus once more shall He arise
To light his ransomed to the skies.
