88. REDEEMING LOVE. (Oxford.)

1 There is a fountain filled with blood
Drawn from Immanuel's veins :
And sinners plunged beneath that flood,
Lose all their guilty stains.

2 The dying thief rejoiced to see
That fountain in his day;
And there, have I, as vile as he,
Washed all my sins away.

3 Dear dying Lamb, thy precious blood
Shall never lose its power,

Till all the ransomed church of God
Be sav'd to sin no more.

4 E'er since by faith, I saw the stream
Thy flowing wounds supply,

Redeeming love has been my theme,
And shall be, till I die.

89.LORD REMEMBER ME.(Spa Field's Chapel.)

10 Thou, from whom all goodness flows,

I lift my heart to Thee;

In all my sorrows, conflicts, woes,

Dear Lord, remember me.

2 When on my weary labouring heart
My sins lie heavily,

My pardon speak, new life impart,
In love remember me.

3 Temptations sore obstruct my way,
And ills, I cannot flee.

O give me strength, Lord, as my day,
For good, remember me.

4 If for thy sake, upon my name,
Shame and reproaches be,

All hail reproach, and welcome shame,
If Thou remember me.

5 The honr is near, consigned to death,
I own the just decree;

Then, when I yield my parting breath,
My God, remember me.

90. THE CHURCH IN EARTH AND HEAVEN,

(Piety.)

1 Come let us join our friends above,
Who have obtained the prize,
And on the eagle wings of love,
To joy celestial rise.

2 One family, we dwell in Him,
One church, above, beneath ;
Though now divided by the stream,-
The narrow stream of death.

3 One army of the living God, To his command we bow;

[ocr errors]

Part of the host have crossed the flood,
And part are crossing now.

4 E'en now to their eternal home
Some happy spirits fly;
And we are to the margin come,
And soon expect to die.

5 O Jesus, be our constant guide;
Then, when the word is given,
Bid Jordan's narrow stream divide,
And land us safe in heaven,

91. ON THE PROMISES. (Cedar.)

1 While dwelling in this wintry vale,
Where countless ills my soul assail,
How sweet the promises to plead,
And gather help for every need,

2 Dear, precious promises! which shed
Such light around the pilgrim's head!
Rich beams of mercy sent to bless
Our spirits in this wilderness!

3 The darkest hour, the deepest woe,
The strongest, and the deadliest foe
Cannot the weakest soul disarm,
Which rests on the Almighty arm.

4 Jesus, preserve my heart from sin,
Subdue all evil thoughts within,
Till I am filled with life divine,
And all thy promises are mine.

5 Then should the tempter's fiery dart
Be aimed in malice at my heart,
Faith will a heavenly shield supply,
And bring some cheering promise nigh.

92.

SALVATION. (Ashley.)

1 Salvation! O the joyful sound!
'Tis pleasure to our ears;

A sovereign balm for every wound,
A cordial for our fears.

2 Buried in sorrow, and in sin,
At hell's dark door we lay,
But we arise by grace divine.
To see a heavenly day.

3 Salvation! let the echo fly

The spacious earth around,
While all the armies of the sky
Combine to raise the sound.

CHORUS.

Glory, honour, praise, and power,
Be unto the Lamb for ever!
Jesus Christ is our Redeemer !
Hallelujah! praise the Lord!

93. HATRED OF SIN. (Islington.)

1 Holy Lord God! I love thy truth,
Nor dare thy least commandment slight;
Yet, pierced by sin, the serpent's tooth,
I mourn the anguish of the bite.
