PREFACE TO THE SECOND EDITION. It must always be a satisfaction to the writer of a law book when the demand for it is sufficient to enable him to keep it abreast of the case law on the subject of which it treats. The preparation of this edition has, however, given me an opportunity not only of incorporating the results of the chief Admiralty decisions since 1878, but also of thoroughly revising and somewhat enlarging the book both in text and appendices; for a careful observation of the work of the Admiralty Court since the first edition was published could not fail to show in what way a second might be made more useful. I have to thank my friend Mr. C. F. Jemmett for assisting me from time to time, and Mr. J. G. Smith, deputy registrar, for information on some points of practice. E. S.
