Be it therefore enacted by the Governor of the Gold Coast Colony, with the advice and consent of the Legislative Council thereof, as follows:

1. All acts done, permitted to be done, or sanctioned by the Governor with respect to the arrest or detention of the said Kwasi Gimibul alias Akwasi Gimibil, father of King Prempeh, Osu Chi, King of Mampon, Kojo Appia alias Kojo Kowo, King of Offisu, Kofi Mena alias Afian alias Afrani, King of Ejisu, Kwasi Akakoon alias Kwasi Akakoo, linguist, and Boachi Attensi alias Boachi Attansa (hereinafter called the said political prisoners) or any of them prior to the passing of this Ordinance are hereby declared to be legal and valid as if the same had been done, permitted to be done, or sanctioned under the authority of the Legislature of the Colony, and no proceedings calling in question the legality of such acts shall have any effect whatsoever.

2. 5. 6. Ordinance No. 3 of 1896.

AN ORDINANCE to provide for the Allotment and Regula-
tion of Village Sites.
[8th April, 1896.

WHEREAS it is expedient to make provision for the
allotment and regulation of village sites;

Be it therefore enacted by the Governor of the Gold Coast Colony, with the advice and consent of the Legislative Council thereof, as follows:

1. This Ordinance may be cited as "The Village Sites Ordinance, 1896."

2. If at any time it shall seem to the Governor expedient to set apart any land vested in the Queen for the use of the Government of the Colony as a village site, the Governor may by writing under his hand declare that the land therein described is and the same shall be set apart as a village site.

3. Houses may be built upon such land only with the authority of the District Commissioner of the district in which it is situated, and subject to such rules as may be made from time to time under section 5 hereof.

4. The occupation of any portion of a village site for building houses and planting trees and making gardens shall be subject to the following conditions:

(a) That the Government may at any time after three months' notice resume the whole or any portion of a village site upon paying to the persons disturbed the full value of their houses, trees and growing crops.

AN ORDINANCE to authorize the Appropriation and Establishment of Ferries and to regulate the same.

[8th August, 1896.

establish new ferries where they are needed; and may from time to time change the course of any public ferry or discontinue any public ferry that is deemed unnecessary. Provided always that if any person and his predecessors in title shall have been the owners of a ferry and have beneficially occupied the same for and during three years or more before the commencement of this Ordinance no order or declaration shall be made under this section whereby such owner might be deprived thereof unless and until it shall be made to appear to the Governor that

(a) The owner of such ferry has been in the habit of levying tolls not sanctioned by native custom,

or that

(b) The owner of such ferry has neglected or mismanaged it, or that

(c) The ferry is the subject of dispute between rival chiefs or tribes, or that

(d) The owner of such ferry upon receiving compensation (the amount of which shall be agreed upon by the Colonial Secretary and the owner of such ferry, and in case of disagreement shall be assessed by the Divisional Court of the Province in which the ferry is situated), consents to its transfer to and vesting in Her Majesty for the use of the Colony.*

3. Tolls according to such rates as shall from time to time be fixed by the Governor in Council shall be levied upon all passengers, carts, carriages, cattle and other animals, and on all goods and merchandize carried over any public ferry.†

4. At every public ferry a toll-keeper or toll-keepers may be appointed, whose duty it shall be to take the lawful tolls.

5. A table of tolls, written or printed shall be hung up in some conspicuous place near every ferry, so as to be easily read by all persons crossing at the ferry.
