obedient hearts, that we may meekly receive whatsoever Thou hast taught us.

Make us ready to believe, where we cannot see; and willing to trust, where we cannot comprehend.

Let Thy Word be our light: Thine eye our guide: Thy love our law: and Thy presence our rest.

Enable us, as children of light and of the day, to renounce the hidden things of dishonesty, and to have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness.

Grant that, walking in truth and uprightness, in purity and sincerity, before Thee, our fellowship may be with Thee the Father, and with Thy Son, Jesus Christ; and that, when the shadows of this life have passed away, we may enjoy the vision of Thy heavenly glory, and may ourselves shine forth, with the brightness of the sun, in Thy kingdom for ever and Amen.

ever.

6.

O Thou Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, we beseech Thee, according to the riches of Thy glory, to strengthen us with might by Thy Spirit in the inner man, that Christ may dwell in our hearts by faith; so that, being rooted and grounded in love, we may be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height, and to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge. Amen.

7.

0 od, everlasting and Almighty, whose grace hath appeared, bringing salvation to all men; teach

us to deny ungodliness and worldly lusts, and to live soberly, righteously, and godly in this present world; looking for that blessed hope, even the glorious appearing of our great God and Saviour Jesus Christ; who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto Himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works. Amen.

8.

Almighty Father, who hast given Thine only Son to die for our sins, and to rise again for our justification, grant us so to put away the leaven of malice and wickedness, that we may alway serve Thee in pureness of living and truth; through the merits of the same, Thy Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Entercessions.

1.

A Prayer for all conditions of men.

O God, the Creator and Preserver of all mankind, we humbly beseech Thee for all sorts and conditions of men, that Thou wouldst be pleased to make Thy ways known unto them, Thy saving health unto all nations. More especially we pray for the good estate of the Catholic Church; that it may be so guided and governed by Thy good Spirit, that all who profess and call themselves Christians may be led into

the way of truth, and hold the faith in unity of spirit, in the bond of peace, and in righteousness of life. Finally, we commend to Thy fatherly goodness all those who are anyways afflicted or distressed in mind, body, or estate [especially those for whom our prayers are desired]; that it may please Thee to comfort and relieve them according to their several necessities, giving them patience under their sufferings, and a happy issue out of all their afflictions; and this we beg for Jesus Christ His sake. Amen.

2.

Short Form of Intercession, specially for use when there is a celebration of the Holy Communion.

We remember before Thee Thy Church militant here upon earth.

We pray Thee for all ministers of the Catholic Church, and for all baptized people.

We Thee to look down in mercy upon Thy pray desolate heritage, upon Thy scattered and divided people; heal the schisms of the Churches; put away all heresies from among them; bring back all who have wandered; cleanse Thy sanctuary from all defilement of superstition, will-worship, and infidelity; and grant unto Thy Church unity and peace.

We commend unto Thee the congregation here present, whose faith and piety do Thou accept and increase.

We pray Thee for the children of Christian parents, that they may be brought up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.

Amen.

S

We pray Thee for all kings, princes, and governors, and for all the people; especially for Thy servant Queen Victoria, for her whole council, and for all the people of her realm.

We pray Thee that Thou wilt give peace in our days.

We pray Thee for favourable weather, and that Thou wilt give unto us the fruits of the earth in due Amen.

season.

We pray Thee for all Jews, Turks, infidels, and heretics, that Thou wilt turn their hearts. Amen.

We beseech Thee for all who are in trouble, sorrow, need, sickness, or any other adversity.

We commend unto Thee all departing this life; and we beseech Thee to receive them to Thy rest.

Amen.

We remember before Thee all those departed in the faith; the holy apostles and prophets, the evangelists and pastors; the blessed martyrs and confessors; and all Thy saints who have gone before. Amen.

Hasten, O God, the time when Thou shalt send. from Thy right hand Him whom Thou wilt send; at whose appearing the saints departed shall be raised, and we, which are alive, shall be caught up to meet Him, and so shall ever be with the Lord. Under the veil of earthly things we have now communion with Him; but with unveiled face we shall then behold Him, made like unto Him in His glory; and

by Him we, with all Thy Church, holy and unspotted, shall be presented with exceeding joy before the presence of Thy glory. Hear us, O heavenly Father, for His sake, to whom, with Thee and the Holy Ghost, one living and true God, be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

3.

O God, in mercy remember Thine inheritance, and forget not the congregation of the poor for ever. Thou art our Redeemer and the lifter up of our head, and under the shadow of Thy wings shall we find our shelter and our rest.

Have mercy upon us, O God, and hide not Thyself from our petitions.

Preserve, O God, the Catholic Church in holiness and truth, in unity and peace. May she ever advance the honour of her Lord, for ever represent His sacrifice, glorify His Person, and advance His religion, that being accepted of Thee, and filled with His spirit, she may partake of His glory.

Have mercy upon us, O God, and hide not Thyself from our petitions.

Give the spirit of justice and righteousness to all Christian kings and governors; grant that their people may obey them, and that they may obey Thee. Especially do we pray for our Sovereign Lady the Queen, that she may reign in peace and in true religion, a partaker of Thy blessing here and of Thy kingdom of glory hereafter, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Have mercy upon us, O God, and hide not Thyself from our petitions.
