THE LECTIONARY.

THE Lessons for Morning and Evening Service on the Lord's Day form a two-years' course. The First Lesson in the Morning Service is selected from the historical books of the Old Testament, on the principle of conveying an outline of the sacred history; and the First Lesson in the Evening Service is taken from the prophetical writings, the order of the canon being followed throughout. The Second Lesson is taken from the Gospels in the Morning, and from the Epistles in the Evening Service.

The Table for the First Year is to be used in those years of which the number is odd, as 1895-97, &c.; the Table for the Second Year in those of which the number is even, as 1896-98, &c.

When Psalms and Lessons are specified in

the Table of Psalms and Lessons for Special Services, as proper for a special occasion, the Psalms and Lessons of ordinary course are then to be omitted.

According to the Table of Daily Lessons, the Old Testament is read through once, with the exception of certain parts omitted as less suitable, and the New Testament twice, every year.
