SINCE the year 1777, in which I was born, I am sure, at the most moderate computation, that authors have multiplied fourfold; and readers, perhaps, eightfold; and as many take a pen in hand with very little natural talent, I do not see why I should not do the same. I have been from a child a great observer, and I sometimes fancy that my observations might be of some use to those of my own class and habits; and therefore, after much consideration, I have decided on committing some of them to paper from time to time, as I have opportunity: but as I know nothing of essay writing, or anything of that sort, I have thought that the best plan for such a man as myself would be to give the world B |
