FRANKLIN KNIGHT LANE, of San Francisco, Cal., Secretary of the Interior (1866 Wyoming Avenue), was born near Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada, July 15, 1864; son of Dr. C. S. and C. W. H. Lane; removed to California during childhood; educated at the University of California 1886; married Anne Wintermute, of Tacoma, Wash., April 11, 1893; engaged in newspaper work in college days and later was reporter, New York correspondent for western papers, and part owner and editor of the Tacoma Daily News; admitted to the bar in California in 1889; corporation counsel for city of San Francisco three terms, 1897-1902; candidate for governor of California 1902; party vote of Legislature of California for United States Senator 1903; member Interstate Commerce Commission December, 1905, to March, 1913; formerly member permanent international railway commission, representing United States Government; took oath of office as Secretary of the Interior March 5, 1913.
