In what may be the first play from Shakespeare's pen, The Two Gentlemen of Verona has been linked to the sonnets with its lyrical languge and themes of friendship and romantic betrayal. The play contains early thematic signatures of Shakespeare's dramas, such as cross-dressing and the balancing of romantic and comical threads, employed again in As You Like It, Twelfth Night, and A Midsummer Night's Dream.

About the Illustrator:

Inspired by 19th-century engravings of the Bard's work, Thomas Fasano began illustrating all of Shakespeare's plays, creating images that not only mirror lines from the plays but reimagine the work of master book illustrators of the 1800s. Completely self-taught, Fasano uses a variety of deliberately low-tech mediums, including graphite pencils, color pencils, watercolor, and gouache.

This edition--the first volume in the Illustrated Shakespeare---contains the unabridged text of The Two Gentlemen of Verona as published in Volume I of The Windsor Shakespeare
