Thy knowledge of our necessities and the fulness of Thy love. Strengthen us to keep Thy commandments: deliver us from our infirmities; and uphold us with Thy free Spirit. Enable us for those duties which Thou hast laid upon us, that our work being well done, we may enjoy the fruit of our labour, in a good conscience and a contented mind. And so direct us in all our ways, that we may have the light of Thy Word upon our path, and the fellowship of Thy Spirit in our hearts, and may ever continue among the faithful followers of Thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THOU most wise and ever-gracious Lord, the Framer of our bodies and the Father of our spirits, who hast kept our souls in life and guided our feet into these gates of Prayer: We pray for each other, all for each, that Thou wouldest bless us outwardly in our bodies, and inwardly in our souls: grant us good success in all our labours, and bring us to Thine everlasting kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

LORD, our heavenly Father, almighty and everlasting God, who hast safely brought us to the beginning of this day; Defend us in the same with Thy mighty power, and grant that this day we fall into no sin, neither run into any kind of danger; but that all our doings, being ordered by Thy governance, may be righteous in Thy sight; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

A TRAVELLER'S PRAYER.

LORD God omnipotent, who reignest in the heavens and on the earth; We implore Thy guidance and protection for all our journeyings. Against all perils be Thou our strong defense, and in far regions be Thou our faithful friend; keep us in health and heart; prosper the ends of our adventure, and make the way of our going and of our returning both safe and happy; and so direct the steps of all Thy pilgrims through this world, that we shall finally arrive in the better country, even the heavenly, with Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

A PRAYER AT SEA.

ETERNAL Lord God, who alone spreadest out the heavens, and rulest the raging of the sea;' We commend ourselves to Thine almighty protection on the great deep. Guard us, we beseech Thee, from the dangers of the sea, from sickness, from the violence of enemies, from every evil; and conduct us in safety to our desired haven, with a grateful sense of Thy mercies; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

INTERCESSIONS.

A GENERAL INTERCESSION.

GOD, the Creator and Preserver of all mankind, we humbly_beseech Thee for all sorts and conditions of men; that Thou wouldest be pleased to make Thy ways known unto them, Thy saving health unto all nations. More especially, we pray for Thy holy Church universal; that it may be so guided and governed by Thy good Spirit, that all who profess and call themselves Christians may be led into the way of truth, and hold the faith in unity of spirit, in the bond of peace, and in righteousness of life. Finally, we commend to Thy fatherly goodness all those who are any ways afflicted, or distressed, in mind, body, or estate; that it may please Thee to comfort and relieve them, according to their several necessities; giving them patience under their sufferings, and a happy issue out of all their afflictions. And this we beg for Jesus Christ's sake. Amen.

FOR OUR COUNTRY.

ALMIGHTY God, who hast established our Nation in freedom and righteousness; We pray Thee to fire the heart of her government and people with that holy faith and courage which made her fathers strong in the day of battle: that, whether they labour at home or follow her flag into far seas and foreign countries, their labours may be blest of Thee, and her unstained flag may be the symbol of justice and strength. Give wisdom and grace to Thy servant the President of the United States and unity to her councils. Uplift all hearts to the inspiration of those great ideals of liberty and truth for which so many

lives have been laid down; and grant that the sacrifice may be crowned with victory. Sustain the army and navy by Thy right arm. Proclaim Thy power among the nations; reveal Thy glory among all peoples; and turn the hearts of the enemy; till the world shall be filled with the light of Thy righteousness, and all men shall dwell together in the safety of Thy peace. For Christ's sake. Amen.

A PRAYER FOR FRIENDS AND KINDRED.

LORD, our heavenly Father, bless and keep, we pray Thee, our kindred, friends, and benefactors, and graciously watch between them and us, while we are absent one from another, that in due time we may meet again to praise Thee, and hereafter dwell together in heavenly mansions; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

A GENERAL PRAYER IN THE MORNING.

ALMIGHTY God, our Father and Preserver; We give

Thee thanks that of Thy goodness Thou hast watched over us the past night, and brought us to a new day: and we beseech Thee to strengthen and guard us by Thy Spirit, that we may spend it wholly in Thy service and to Thy glory, looking for all prosperity to Thy blessing, and seeking only those things which are well-pleasing in Thy sight. Enable us, O Lord, while we labour for the life that now is, ever to have regard unto that heavenly life which Thou hast promised Thy children. Defend us in soul and body from all harm. And seeing it is a small thing to have begun well, except we also persevere, take us, O Lord, into Thy good keeping this day and all our days: continue and increase Thy grace within us, until we shall be perfectly united in the glory of Thy Son. Show Thy loving-kindness unto all men and women and little children, according to the need of every living soul, especially unto those whom we love, and those who are in any kind of trouble or distress, whom we now remember silently before Thee: [here let there be a moment of prayer in silence:] Protect our country and prosper Thy Church: Bless all who do good in the world, and restrain and convert all who do evil. And finally, be pleased to cast out of Thy remembrance all our past offenses, forgiving them in Thy boundless mercy and

purifying our hearts that we may lead a better life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

A GENERAL PRAYER IN THE EVENING.

GOD most merciful, Light eternal in the darkness shining, by whom the night of sin and the blindness of our hearts are driven away: Since Thou hast appointed the day for labour and the night for rest; grant unto us, we beseech Thee, that our bodies may repose in peace and quietness, that afterward they may be able to endure the toil which Thou hast laid upon us in Thy service: Temper our sleep that it be not disorderly, and keep us spotless both in body and in soul, that our very rest may be to Thy glory, renewing the strength of our hearts and our joy in Thee: Enlighten the eyes of our understanding that we may not sleep in death, but obtain deliverance, through faith and hope, from all fear of this misery: Defend us against all assaults of our enemies, and take us into Thy holy protection. And although we have not passed this day without greatly sinning against Thee, we beseech Thee to hide our sins with Thy mercy, as Thou coverest all things on earth with the darkness of the night, that they may be blotted out from Thy remembrance, and we may abide in Thy Presence and Thy favour, both now and for evermore. Relieve and comfort, with Thy fatherly goodness, all who are afflicted or distressed in mind, body, or estate: Protect and prosper, with Thine almighty power, our country and our rulers, the whole Church of Christ on earth, our home, and all that we hold dear and sacred: Be pleased to guard and help those whom we silently remember before Thee: [here let there be a moment of prayer in silence:] Bless us and keep us, watch over us and save us, O God in whom we trust; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

A PRAYER OF ST. CHRYSOSTOM.

ALMIGHTY God, who hast given us grace at this time with one accord to make our common supplications unto Thee; and dost promise that when two or three are gathered together in Thy Name Thou wilt grant their requests: Fulfil now, O Lord, the desires and petitions of Thy servants, as may be most expedient for them; grant

ing us in this world knowledge of Thy truth, and in the world to come life everlasting. Amen.

THE CLOSING PRAYER.

GRANT, we beseech Thee. Almighty God, that the words, which we have heard this day with our outward ears, may through Thy grace be so grafted inwardly in our hearts, that they may bring forth in us the fruit of good living, to the honour and praise of Thy Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

LET Thy Gospel, O Lord, come unto us not in word only but in power, and in much assurance, and in the Holy Ghost, that we may be guided into all truth, and strengthened unto all obedience and enduring of Thy will with joyfulness; that, abounding in the work of faith, and the labour of love, and the patience of hope, we may finally be made partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

O LORD Jesus Christ, who hast died for us, that whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with Thee; Be Thou our strength every morning, and our rest when the shadows of the evening are stretched out, O Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

GOD, from whom all holy desires, all good counsels, and all just works do proceed; Give unto Thy servants that peace which the world cannot give; that both our hearts may be set to obey Thy commandments, and also that by Thee, we, being defended from the fear of our enemies, may pass our time in rest and quietness; through the merits of Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen.
