MILLER CHARITY ORGANIZATION SOCIETY IN THE CITY OF NEW YORK 1916 FOREWORD HE TWENTY-FIFTH EDITION of the New York Charities Directory comes to you not only in new form, but in a new dress as well. The plan of listing the agencies is the same as that used in the book for 1915, in which a radical departure was made from the arrangement of previous editions; but we have added in this. year's book the page numbers in the Topical Index, and have used a more readable style of typography through out. The present plan of the Directory, however, will not be permanent unless it is found to render the book more useful. Our wish is to bring the Directory up to the highest standard of usefulness as a ready reference book of the social resources of Greater New York. To do this we need your co-operation. Your criticism is earnestly invited. The word 'Charities' has long been outgrown by the ever broadening scope of social service and, though its name remains the same, the Directory has expanded to include every phase of social betterment work. It includes agencies engaged in social, civic, religious or educational work which are located in New York City, which care for residents of New York City or which are looking to New York City for a considerable portion of their funds. National organizations as well as local agencies are listed. 293190 The Directory is not a compilation of organizations endorsed by the Charity Organization Society, although effort has been made to exclude agencies which are actually fraudulent, and to publish only such as are reputable in character. However, accident or lack of information may account for the non-appearance of some agencies, while semi-commercial or mutual benefit associations are not included in the Directory. The omission of an agency, therefore, does not necessarily mean that it is one unworthy of support or co-operation. The information concerning the various societies and institutions has been compiled with their co-operation and is current and authoritative, so far as diligence and care can assure that fact. In some instances, where an asterisk appears before the name of an agency, the entries are based on statements contained in previous editions. The asterisk indicates that current information from the organization in question has not been received in response to our inquiries for this edition. The Charity Organization Society desires to thank the societies and individuals who have co-operated with it in compiling the edition which is now placed at the service of the public. Especially, in view of the new arrangement of the Directory, is criticism needed. It is hoped that those who use this book will aid in increasing its usefulness by making constructive suggestions wherever they see opportunity for improvement. |
