DEDICATION.

TO THE

REVEREND RICHARD OKES, D.D.

PROVOST OF KING'S COLLEGE, CAMBRIDGE.

DEAR MR. PROvost,

We trust you will excuse the liberty we take in venturing to dedicate our book to

you.

Among our brother's many friends, and our own, it is impossible for us to find one, to whom the dedication is so justly due as to yourself.

For you were his father's friend; to your interest and good word he owed his Indian appointment; and one of his brothers owes to

your untiring friendship almost everything he has possessed, or does possess, in life.

If our brother's name was not eminent, it was only not so, because he was so soon summoned from his labours. His life was short, but it was a noble life; for with all the straightforward simplicity and energy of his being he laboured to do his duty to his God and to his country.

Therefore, if we do not dedicate to you the life of an eminent man, we yet offer that of an honest and a good one; and we would fain hope that, when you have added the perusal of our story to what you already know of its subject, you will not disdain our offering.

We have added some mention of the noble woman, who cheered and sustained our brother's living and dying hours, and who, bravely battling with her own overwhelming sorrows, tenderly ministered to the death-beds of many a sufferer in that period of trial and woe.
