EXTRACTS FROM THE PUBLIC NEWSPAPERS.

National Society.-The tenth report of this Society gives a very encouraging account of the great good it has done, and is still doing. The excellent work of education goes on well. The Society has received a legacy of 50001. 3 per cents. from James Hayes, Esq. which will enable them to extend their, useful and liberal exertions. From the numerous and large grants the Society have made to different schools throughout the kingdom, their funds were in a low state before they received Mr. Hayes's legacy. The truly important work in/ which they are engaged, calls for every exertion and assis tance from the friends of the poor,-and we doubt not that they will be enabled by such generous support to persevere in, and to increase, their benevolent efforts. The report states with great satisfaction, the manner in which the boy's school at Baldwin's Gardens is conducted by the Rev. W. Johnson: and likewise mentions in high terms of praise, the excellent condition of the girl's school under Mrs. Morgan, the newlyappointed mistress, assisted by the gratuitous services of her

sister.

In the neighbourhood of Hamilton, in Scotland, an experiment has been made this year, to try the difference between the spade and the plough:-A field was taken,

beans last year and oats the year before as in

dug, and two ploughed alternately, and the whole was sown on the same day, a part both on the ploughed and dug being drilled with the garden hoe: the whole was reaped on the same day, and, being thrashed out, the result has been that the dug sown broadcast was to the plowed sown broadcast as 55 to 42. The dug and drilled was to the ploughed and drilled as 20 to 12. The additional grain is not the only beneficial result gained by digging, as in this instance there was also a great deal more straw. The land is free of weeds, and will be more easily fallowed next year. Bath and Cheltenham Gazette.

A few grains of salt dropped into the water in which flowers are kept, is said to preserve them greatly from fading, keeping them in bloom double the time that pure water will, The Same.

According to a calculation of Mr. Zeune, Director of an Asylum for the Blind at Berlin, there are at least thirteen thousand blind persons in the Prussian dominions; and it is supposed that the number of blind persons in Austria amounts to thirty-six thousand. It is supposed that the introduction of vaccination will lessen this number by one-third.- New

A gentleman of the name of Home, in the neighbourhood of Worthing, having occasion to paint his house, incautiously remained in it contrary to the advice of his friends, during the time that the men were employed. On the fourth day he was seized with vomitings, and complained of a giddiness in his head. Every means which medical skill could devise was tried for his recovery, but without effect.-The Same.

It is ascertained from experiment, that a horse fed on bruised oats will look as well, and do as much labour as one fed on double the quantity of the grain not bruised.-Domestic Chronicle.

The following anecdote taken from Cox's life of Melancthon, shews the wonderful pains which were taken by the early reformers to have exact translations of the Holy Scriptures. "When the Bible was to be translated into German, a select party of learned men, at Wittemberg, assembled every day with Luther to revise every sentence; and they have been known to return fourteen successive days, to the reconsideration of a single line, or even a word.”

TO CORRESPONDENTS.

We have received the communications of R. B.; B. R.; A Lancashire Curate; Mr. Salisbury; C.; and an Arvonian. We cannot close our Volume for this year without expressing our gratification at the extraordinary encouragement which the "Monthly Visitor" has met with. We feel that we are highly indebted to our correspondents for the value which their communications have given to our little work. Before we appeared in the public character of " Visitors," we always felt a great anxiety about our Cottage Neighbours; and it makes us truly happy to find so many friends ready to help us in our endeavours to supply them with amusement or instruction. We are only sorry that we have not yet been able to find room for all their valuable materials.

C. has partly guessed our reason for omitting a "former article;" but if he (or perhaps she) were to see the number of similar dialogues with which our" Cottager's Box" is crowded, this of itself would account for the omission. The Gipsy story we like better. We have two correspondents signed C., it will easily be understood to which we are speaking.

We have this moment received T-a. It would amuse him to see our pile of letters, giving us advice directly opposite to his.

We think the anonymous poem which we have received too sacred for the playful metre which has been chosen.
