CHAPTER Í.

HISTORY OF THE CREATION.

And ihe earth was without form, and void ; and darknels was upon the face of the deep; and the spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters, and God said, Let there be light, and there was light. And God saw the light that it was good : and God divided the light from the darkness. And God called the light day, and the darkness He called night : and the evening and the morning were the first day."

2....And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters froni The waters.

5....And God said, Let there be lights in the firma: ment of heaven; to divide the day from the night : and let them be for signs and for seasons and for days and for years : and let them be for lights in the firmament of heaven to give light upon the earth : and it was so. And God made two great lights ; the greater light to rule ihe day, and the leffer light to rule the night: He made the stars, allo.

fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven : And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind ; and God faw that it was good. : 8....And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful and multiply and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply on the earth. And the evening and the morning were the fifth day.

REMARKS.

Events the most astonishing as well as most interesting are here related with great brevity, and with a Gmple grandeur. The origin of ihe heavens and all their hosts and of the earth with all its furniture passes, as it ware, in review before us. The original institution of the Sabbath, fo necefTary to keep alive a sense of religion, is diftin&tly marked. " We fee. human nature itself traced up io.jes source. We are made acquainted with the venerable father of all men; of whole nature we all partake; by whose conduct we are all affected, and in the consequences of whose actions we are all to this day, deeply involved.” What an iro aluable treasure of knowledge is here contained in a few lines !

CHAPTER II.

TIJE FALL OF MAN, OR INNOCENCE AND

GUILT CONTRASTED.

HE Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his noftrils the breath of life: and man became a living soul. And the Lord God planted a garden eafward in Eden ; and there he put the man whom he had formed. And out of the ground made the Lord God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the fight and good for food : the tree life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowl. edge of good and evil.

2....And a river went out of Eden to water the garden. And the Lord God took the man and put him into the garden to dress it, and to keep it. And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, Ot every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil thou shalt not eat of it; for in the day that thou eatest thereof ihou shalt surely die.

3....And the Lord God laid, It is not good that man should be alone ; I will make an help meet for him. And the Lord God made a woman, and brought her unto the man. And Adam said, This is now bone of my bone and flesh of my flesh. And Adam called bis wife's name Eve, because she was the mother, of all living.

5....And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall noi surely die : for God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened: and ye fhall be as Gods knowing good and evil.- And when the woman saw that the irce was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wife, she took of the fruit thereot and did eat : and gave also to her husband with her, and he did eat.

And they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden, in the cool of the day : and Adam and his wite bid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the the trees of the garden. And the Lord God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou ? And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, and I hid my felf.

7....And he said, Haft thou eaten of the tree whereot I commanded thee that thou shouldeft not eat ? And the man said, The woman--the gave me of the tree and I did eat. And the Lord God laid unto the woman What is this that thou hast done? And the woma? faid, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.

8....And the Lord said unto the serpent, Because thou haft done this, thou art cursed above every beaft of the field : upon thy belly fhalt thou go, and duft shalt thou eat all the days of thy life. And I will put enmity be
