[blocks in formation]

(From "The Spirit of the Psalms.") VIDE as the glorious arch of heav'n Thy mercy, Lord, expands;

W

Firm as the mountains' solid base
Thy truth unshaken stands.

2 Thy judgments, like th' unfathom'd deep, Our feeble march defy;

[ocr errors]

Thy bounty, Lord, for all that breathe,
Affords a rich supply:

3 And faithful Christians rest secure
Beneath thy shelt'ring wing,

And draughts of purest pleasure drain
From life's eternal spring.

4 They, walking in the Gospel's light,
So richly shed abroad,
Advance, till perfect day reveals
The glory of the Lord.

[blocks in formation]

(From "The Spirit of the Psalms.") [OW blest are they who daily prove, By acts of charity and love,

The fervent gratitude they owe

To Him from whom all blessings flow:
In hours of sickness or of pain,

God will their fainting souls sustain;
Bright hopes shall cheer their bed of death,
Sweet peace attend their parting breath.
2 When, summon'd from the silent tomb,
Th' assembled world await their doom,

C

These shall behold their Saviour's face Beaming with smiles of heav'nly grace, And from His lips their raptur'd ear Shall this, their gracious sentence, hear― "Come, O ye blessed of the Lord! Come, and receive your bright reward!"

PSALM XLV. P. M.

(From "The Spirit of the Psalms.") VITH hearts in love abounding, Prepare we now to sing

WI

A lofty theme, resounding

Thy praise, Almighty King;
Whose love, rich gifts bestowing,
Redeem'd the human race;
Whose lips, with zeal o'erflowing,
Breathe words of truth and grace.

2 In Majesty transcendent,

Gird on Thy conqu'ring sword;
In righteousness resplendent,
Ride on, Incarnate Word:
Ride on, O King Messiah,
To glory and renown;
Pierc'd by Thy darts of fire,
Be ev'ry foe o'erthrown.

3 So reign, O God, in heaven,
Eternally the same,

And endless praise be given
To Thy Almighty Name.
Cloth'd in thy dazzling brightness,
Thy Church on earth behold,
In robe of purest whiteness,

In raiment wrought with gold:

4 And let each Gentile Nation
Come gladly in her train,
To share Thy great Salvation,
And join her grateful strain.
Then ne'er shall note of sadness
Awake the trembling string,
One song of joy and gladness
The ransom'd world shall sing.

PSALM LI. Version 1. L. M. THOU that hear'st the mourner's cry, Though all my sins before thee lie, Behold them not with angry look, But blot their record from thy book. 2 Create my nature pure within, And make my soul to loathe its sin: Let thy good Spirit ne'er depart, Nor hide thy presence from my heart. 3 We cannot live without thy light, Cast out and banish'd from thy sight: Thy holy joys, O God, restore, And guard us that we fall no more.

PSALM LI. Version 2.

L. M.

1 BEHOLD the stain of Nature's sin,
Fix'd in my birth, remains within,
Conceiv'd in guilt, of fallen race,
Deep in pollution and disgrace.

2 But vain with Thee disguise and art;
Thy Laws demand a perfect heart :
Then let thy Spirit, Lord, controul,
Renew, and purify my soul.

3 O Saviour! wash my sins away;
Redeemer! thy great power display ;
The love, the stain of sin efface,
And plant thine image in its place.
4 O let Thy Spirit to my heart
Once more its quick'ning aid impart;
My mind from ev'ry fear release,
And soothe my troubled thoughts to peace.

PSALM LI. Version 3. L. M. 1HO' we have griev'd thy Spirit, Lord, His help and comfort still afford;

And let us venture near thy throne,
To plead the merits of thy Son.
2 A broken heart, O God, our King,
Is all the sacrifice we bring :

Thou, gracious God, wilt ne'er despise
A broken heart for sacrifice.

3 Our souls lie humbled in the dust,
And own thy dreadful sentence just :
Look down, O Lord, with pitying eye,
And save the soul condemn'd to die!
4 So shall thy love inspire our tongue,
Salvation shall be all our song;
And all our powers shall join to bless
The Lord, our Strength and Righteousness.

PSALM LIII. L. M.

NH' Eternal Monarch, from on high,
Cast on the sons of men his eye,
If some among them He might find
To truth and righteousness inclin'd.

2 He look'd; but yet not one he saw,
Who fear'd his Name, who kept his Law;
Each, led from wisdom's path astray,
Pursu'd the tenor of his way.

3 Eternal Monarch! from on high
Look down again with pitying eye,
And where our sin and guilt are found
There let Thy mercy more abound.
4 O look! and to our longing eyes
Bid Thou the wish'd redemption rise:
So shall our hearts with joy record
The great salvation of the Lord.

PSALM LVI. 6 EIGHTS.

(From "The Spirit of the Psalms.")

1 JOIN, all ye servants of the Lord,

To praise Him for his Sacred WordThat Word, like manna sent from heav'n, To all who seek it freely giv'n;

Its promises our fears remove,

And fill our hearts with joy and love. 2 It tells us, though oppress'd with cares, The God of Mercy hears our prayers; Tho' steep and rough th' appointed way, His mighty arm shall be our stay; Though daily foes assail our peace, His power shall bid their malice cease. 3 It tells Who first inspir'd our breath, Whose blood redeem'd our souls from death: It tells of grace-grace freely giv'n, And shews the path to God and heav'n: O praise we, then, our gracious Lord, For all the treasures of His Word!
