And, when the waves of ire
Again the earth shall fill,

The Ark shall ride the sea of fire;
Then rest on Sion's hill.

THE KINGDOM OF CHRIST.

[graphic]
[blocks in formation]

HEN God descends with men

to dwell,

And all creation wakes anew, What tongue can half the wonders tell?

the dazzling glory view?

Zion, the desolate, again

Shall see her lands with roses bloom ; And Carmel's mount, and Sharon's plain, Shall yield their spices and perfume.

Celestial streams shall gently flow;
The wilderness shall joyful be;
Lilies on parchéd ground shall grow;
And gladness spring on every tree.

The weak be strong, the fearful bold,

The deaf shall hear, the dumb shall sing,

The lame shall walk, the blind behold, And joy through all the earth shall ring.

Monarchs and slaves shall meet in love;

Old pride shall die, and meekness reign, When God descends from worlds above, To dwell with men on earth again.

THE BANNER OF THE CROSS.

LING out the Banner! let it float Sky-ward and sea-ward, high and wide;

The sun, that lights its shining folds, The Cross, on which the Saviour died.

Fling out the Banner! Angels bend,
In anxious silence, o'er the sign;
And vainly seek to comprehend

The wonder of the love divine.

Fling out the Banner! Heathen lands
Shall see, from far, the glorious sight,

And nations, crowding to be born,
Baptize their spirits in its light.

Fling out the Banner! Sin-sick souls,
That sink and perish in the strife,
Shall touch in faith its radiant hem,
And spring immortal into life.

Fling out the Banner! Let it float
Sky-ward, sea-ward, high and wide;
Our glory, only in the Cross;

Our only hope the Crucified.

Fling out the Banner! Wide and high, Sea-ward and sky-ward, let it shine: Nor skill, nor might, nor merit, ours; We conquer only in that sign.
