2 Angel of Gospel-grace, Fulfil thy character;

3

To guard and feed thy chosen race,
In Israel's camp appear.

Throughout the desert way
Conduct us by thy light;
Be thou a cooling cloud by day,
A cheering fire by night.
4 Our fainting souls sustain
With blessings from above;
And ever on thy people rain
The manna of thy love.

HYMN LXXX.

1 Now let our pains be all forgot,
Our hearts no more repine:
Our suff'rings are not worth a thought,
When, Lord, compar'd with thine.

2 In lively figures here we see

The bleeding Prince of Love;
Each of us hopes, he died for me,
And then our griefs remove.
3 His soul, what agonies it felt,
When his own God withdrew;
And the large load of all our guilt
Lay heavy on him too!

4 But the divinity within
Supported him to bear:

Dying, he conquer'd hell and sin,
And made his triumph there.

5 Our hymns should sound like those above, Could we our voices raise;

Yet, Lord, our hearts shall all be love,
And all our lives be praise.

HYMN LXXXI.

I FATHER, we wait to feel thy grace,
To see thy glories shine:

The Lord will his own table bless,
And make the feast divine.

2 We touch, we taste the heav'nly bread,
We drink the sacred cup;
With outward forms our sense is fed,
Our souls rejoice in hope.

3 We shall appear before the throne
Of our forgiving God,

Dress'd in the garments of his Son,
And sprinkled with his blood.

4 We shall be strong to run the race,
And climb the upper sky:

Christ will provide our souls with grace:
He bought a large supply.

HYMN LXXXII.

1 SALVATION! O the joyful sound!
What pleasure to our ears!

A sov'reign balm for every wound,
A cordial for our fears.

Glory, honour, praise and power,
Be unto the Lamb for ever!
Jesus Christ is our Redeemer!
Hallelujah, praise the Lord!

2 Salvation! Let the echo fly
The spacious earth around;
While all the armies of the sky
Conspire to raise the sound.

3 Salvation! O thou bleeding Lamb,
To thee the praise belongs:
Salvation shall inspire our hearts,
And dwell upon our tongues.

MORNING AND

EVENING.

[PSALMS 5, 19.]

HYMN LXXXIII.

1 AWAKE, my soul, and with the sun
Thy daily stage of duty run;
Shake off dull sloth, and early rise,
To pay thy morning sacrifice.

2 Wake and lift up thyself, my heart,
And with the angels bear thy part,
Who all night long unwearied, sing
High glory to th' Eternal King.

3 Glory to thee, who safe hast kept,
And hast refresh'd me while I slept:
Grant, Lord, when I from death shall wake,
I may of endless life partake.

4 Lord, I my vows to thee renew;
Scatter my sins as morning-dew:
Guard my first springs of thought and will,
And with thyself my spirit fill.

5 Direct, controul, suggest this day,
All I design, or do, or say;

That all my powers, with all their might, In thy sole glory may unite.

HYMN LXXXIV.

1 GOD of the morning, at whose voice The cheerful sun makes haste to rise, And like a giant doth rejoice

To run his journey through the skies. 2 From the fair chambers of the east The circuit of his race begins;

And without weariness or rest, Round the whole earth he flies and shines. 3 O! like the sun, may I fulfil

Th' appointed duties of the day; With ready mind and active will March on, and keep my heav'nly way. 4 But I shall rove and lose the race, If God, my sun, should disappear, And leave me in this world's wide maze, To follow ev'ry wand'ring star. 5 Give me thy counsel for my guide, And then receive me to thy bliss: All my desires and hopes beside Are faint and cold compar'd with this.

HYMN LXXXV.

1 HOSANNA with a cheerful sound
To God's upholding hand!
Ten thousand snares attend us round,
And yet secure we stand.

2 That was a most amazing power,
That form'd us with a word:
And ev'ry day, and ev'ry hour,
We lean upon the Lord.

3 The evening rests our weary head,
And angels guard the room:
We wake, and we admire the bed,
That was not made our tomb.

4 The rising morning can't assure
That we shall end the day;
For Death stands ready at the door
To take our lives away.

5 Our breath is forfeited by sin
To God's avenging law :

We own thy grace, Immortal King,
In ev'ry gasp we draw.

6 God is our sun, whose daily light
Our joy and safety brings;
Our feeble flesh lies safe at night
Beneath his shady wings.

HYMN LXXXVI.

1 My God, how endless is thy love!
Thy gifts are ev'ry evening new;
And morning mercies from above
Gently distil like early dew.

2 Thou spread'st the curtains of the night,
Great Guardian of my sleeping hours;
Thy sov'reign word restores the light,
And quickens all my drowsy powers.
3 I yield my powers to thy command;
To thee I consecrate my days:
Perpetual blessings from thy hand
Demand perpetual songs of praise.

HYMN LXXXVII.

1 GLORY to thee, my God, this night,
For all the blessings of the light;
Keep me, O keep me, King of kings,
Beneath thine own almighty wings!
2 Forgive me, Lord, for thy dear Son,
The ills that I this day have done;
That with the world, myself, and thee,
I, ere I sleep, at peace may be.

3 Teach me to live, that I may dread.
The grave, as little as my bed;
Teach me to die, that so I may
Rise glorious at the awful day.
