OF THE Birth, Parentage, and Character of there

verend Mr. THOMAS HALYBURTON, with some other Circumstances of his Life, and last Words on his Death-Bed.

TR. THOMAS HALYBURTON, pro.

fessor of divinity in the New ColLV1 lege of St. Andrew's, was born at Daplin, in the parish of Aberdalgy, Decem. 25th, 1674, of worthy and godly parents, Mr. George Halyburton, and Margaret Playfere. His father was descended of the fa. mily of Pitcur, in the county of Angus; and svas minister of the parish of Aberdalgy in the Presbytery of Perth, our of which he was ejected by the then government, in the year 1662, as about 300 more ministers were also, fuminarly without any legal process, fimply for non-conforinity to Prelacy.

Mr. George Halyburton, who was then bishop of Dunkeld, and had been a zealous covenanter, suddenly became so forward for che national defection, and so cruel a persecolor of his once fellow-presbyters, that he would not spare him more than others, tho' he was his near kinsman, but turned him ont of his charge : and yet that prelate was scarce well warm in his nest, when the Lord
