In the present edition there are certain alterations of arrangement and some new matter, to which it is desired to call the attention of the reader. The first Chapter of the former edition is expanded and subdivided; it is now represented by Chapters L, II., III., V. and X. In Chapter X., which deals with the rule as to division of loss, some early unreported decisions of the Admiralty Court, and of the Court of the Judges Delegates upon appeal from the Admiralty, are referred to. These cases, which are of historical interest, and may prove to be of some legal importance, it is proposed to include in a collection of early Admiralty cases now in the course of publication by the present writer. To this collection occasional reference is made in the following pages.

With the exception above referred to, the arrangement of the present edition follows that of
