[Entered at Stationers' Hall.]

[blocks in formation]

EXPERIENCE has shown that the majority of failures at the Oxford and Cambridge Local, and at the Civil Service Examinations arises from an imperfect knowledge of the rules with regard to the formation of gender and number in substantives and adjectives, the irregular conjugations of verbs, in both the English and French languages, and the peculiar uses of the verbs" "avoir and “être” with the past participle in French. In the present work a recurrence of questions on these important points has been arranged, and the ideas so kept before the mind of the pupil as to produce a lasting effect. That this plan is beneficial has been shown by the success of several candidates who have had the advantage of using the proof sheets of this work during their preparation for the Civil Service Examination.
