Excerpt from School Reader: Third Grade

Long ago there lived a young princess named Atalanta. She was more like a lad than a maiden. She loved to run, to swim, and to hunt.

A quiver full of arrows hung from her shoulder. In her left hand she carried her bow. Fleet was the deer that could escape her!

Atalanta had had her fortune told. The oracle had said, Atalanta, do not marry! Harm will come if you do.
