The regulatory status of the lead bank is shown by red pen marks beside each holding company. For example, the lead bank for Citicorp is First National City Bank and the "N" denotes National because First National City Bank has a national charter.

1 Industrial corporations (whose principal business endeavor is not bank related) who have registered as bank holding companies such as Hershey's Chocolate, Minnesota Mining, Olin Chemical, and Beneficial Corp. (Western Auto Supply, Spiegel mail order, Central National Life Insurance, Beneficial Finance, etc.) have not been included in the list. Foreign firms with U.S. holding companies such as the Bank of Tokyo, Safra Bank, Otzar Hityashvuth Hayehudim, Barclays, and the Sumitomo Bank are also excluded.

2 Total assets include nonbank affiliates and foreign operations consolidated with the bank(s) and parent. In some cases total assets may be understated because the holding company used a single line entry instead of full consolidation of nonbank affiliates.

3 Intercompany accounts, deposits and transactions have been eliminated.
