CHAPTER I.

An Act to provide for the Organization and Equipment of a Volunteer Militia, and to provide for the Public Defence.

enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives, in General Assembly convened:

SECTION 1. The governor is hereby authorized and The governor empowered to accept the services and cause to be raise volunteers. enlisted, enrolled and mustered into the service of the state, for such time as he may deem expedient, volunteers, in his discretion as to the number, not to exceed ten thousand men, to be officered, organized, armed and equipped in such manner as the governor shall order and direct; said force hereby authorized being in addition to the present military organization of the state, and a part of the militia thereof.

SEC. 2. The officers and men of this force shall Pay and rations. receive the same pay and rations, while in service under the provisions of this act, until mustered into the service of the United States, as officers and men

SEC. 3. The officers and men of the said force, To be paid only for time actually except when in actual service, shall be paid only for employed. the time actually spent in their organization, drilling and instructions.
