The Snow pump has been removed from the old power house and reset in the pump pit in the new power house, and connections have been made to the breeching of the new 150 horse-power boiler in the new power house. At the close of the fiscal year the foundation for the engine in the new power house was finished, and all is in readiness to move the engine from the old power house to the new. The foundation is ready for the new switch board. The steam and return lines were installed in the conduit between the new power house and the kitchen building. Some difficulty was encountered at the beginning in operating the new plant, but this has been overcome.

At the New York State Custodial Asylum for Feeble-Minded Women at Newark more or less trouble has been experienced in the power house ever since the institution began using its own water supply. This water comes from springs and contains considerable calcium sulphate which precipitates and forms a very hard scale in the boilers. A feed water purifier was installed, but did not prevent the formation of this scale, which failure appeared to be due to the fact that the purifier was not operated according to instructions. A new set of tubes was placed in each one of the boilers, and the seams, set bolts and braces have been repaired repeatedly. The pressure has not been maintained on the purifier or the water level carried as required, nor has the purifier been cleaned as required. From the information at hand it appears that the engineer has devoted time to other work which should have been devoted to the care of the boilers. Had strict attention been paid to the instructions for caring for the boilers and the water purifier, it is believed that the objectionable conditions above referred to would have been corrected. A new steam pump has been installed at the pumping station for fire protection.

The steam supply for this pump has been run on pole supports from the power house to the pumping station.

The power plant at the New York State Woman's Relief Corps Home at Oxford consists of three 100 horse-power boilers. Only ordinary repairs have been made to this plant during the past year, and everything is in good condition.

Five tubular return boilers, with an aggregate rating of 550 horse-power, constitute the power plant at the House of Refuge on Randall's Island. Boiler No. 1 was overheated on the night of October 12th, which necessitated the riveting of the girth seams and the renewing of some of the tubes. At the power house there is one Harrisburg engine direct connected to a 60 kilowatt electric generator, and one Harrisburg engine direct connected to a 30 kilowatt electric generator. There is one Knowles pump and one Worthington duplex pump in the power house, which are used for pumping the water supply and connected to the fire lines. There are two boiler feed pumps, and one Korting injector used for boiler feed in case the pumps give out. There is a feed water heater and a feed water filter located in the power house. In the machine shop there is one horizontal engine 30 horse-power, and in the north shop there is one horizontal engine 25 horse-power. The latter engine has been thoroughly overhauled during the past year. In the girls' laundry there is one 25 horse-power horizontal engine. Three new washing machines have been installed, and the two washing machines and one extractor have been removed from the boys' laundry and reset in the girls' laundry. In the blacksmith shop there is one vertical engine 5 horse-power. The boilers in this institution are fired and cared for by inmates under the direction of the engineers. The assistant engineers have been careless and inattentive to their duties in the power house and boiler room, resulting in extensive repairs to engines and boilers.

The plant at the New York State Hospital for the Treatment of Incipient Pulmonary Tuberculosis at Ray Brook is comparatively new and has required no repairs or improvements during the past year. It consists of three water-tube boilers, rated at 100 horse power each. In the dynamo room there is one General Electric engine and dynamo, one hot-water generator, one receiving tank and a boiler feed pump.

At the State Industrial School in Rochester there are nine horizontal tubular return boilers, rated at 70 horse power each, and two water-tube boilers, rated at 150 horse power each. Ordinary repairs have been made to the brick settings during the year, and minor repairs have been made to boilers and grates. At the power house there are two engines of 125 horse power each, one of 50 horse power and one of 20 horse power. There is one generator 75 kilowatts, two 30 kilowatts each and one generator 30 arc light. In the bakery building there is one 5 horse-power engine and one 1 horse-power motor. In the primary building there are three 5 horse-power motors. In the chapel there are two electric motors, one 10 horse power and one 21⁄2 horse power. In the guardhouse there is one 15 horse-power electric motor. In the shop building there are four electric motors, one 30 horse power, one 22 horse power, one 2 horse power and one 1 horse power. In the boys' kitchen there is one 5 horse-power vertical engine. In the guardhouse there is one 10 horse-power vertical engine. In the carpenter shop there is one 20 horse-power engine, which is not now in use. The motor in the shop building furnishes the power formerly furnished by this engine. On the third division there is one 15 horse-power electric motor.

one of which is used for hoisting ashes and the other is not in use. In the boiler-room there is also a feed-water heater, one receiving tank and two duplex pumps for boiler feeds. The firing and cleaning of the boilers and the removal of ashes is done by the inmates under the direct supervision of the assistant engi

neers.

At the new site at Rush on September 27, 1905, sectional castiron boilers had been installed in eight of the cottages under construction, with steam and return lines. One indirect stack was installed in each cottage, but no other radiation was installed at that time. The direct radiators were on hand ready to connect up as soon as the finish of the rooms would permit. The plumbing was roughed in and a 180-gallon water heater installed in six of the cottages. In Cottage F a sectional castiron boiler has been installed and steam mains and risers have been run. In Cottage G a sectional cast-iron boiler has been installed and the steam mains and risers run. In Cottage Ha sectional cast-iron boiler has been installed and the mains and risers run. The pipe, fittings and radiators used in Cottages F, G and H were taken from the north building at the Rochester institution, and the work of installation was performed by the chief engineer with inmate labor. The general condition of the plant at the State Industrial School is entirely satisfactory.

At the Rome State Custodial Asylum there are two 150 horsepower and three 125 horse-power vertical marine boilers. The foundation has been built for an additional 150 horse-power boiler, which has been installed since the beginning of the cur rent fiscal year. At the power house there are three Watertown engines and one Payne engine, one 40 kilowatts electric generator direct connected to the Watertown engine, one 35 kilowatts elec

tric generator direct connected to Watertown engine, one 40 kilowatts electric generator connected with belt to Watertown engine, one 20 kilowatts electric generator connected with belt to Payne engine. There are two boiler feed pumps located in the pump pit, and one duplex pump located in the power house, which is used for pumping the water supply of the institution, and one compound duplex pump for general use. There is also at the power house one water filter of 12,000 gallons capacity, one 1,200 horse-power feed-water heater, one feed-water filter and hot-water generator of 1,600 gallons capacity. This generator has not been in commission for the past two years, owing to a burst coil in the generator and defective circulating pipe. The coil has been repaired and the defect in the circulating pipe remedied, and at this time the whole institution is supplied with hot water from this generator, doing away with the hot-water heaters in the different buildings. Heating the water and distributing it from a central point will give better satisfaction throughout the different buildings and effect a saving in fuel and repairs. There is one vertical engine used on the fan system for heating in each of the buildings B, D and F and the basement of the kitchen building. In the laundry there is one engine, which has been thoroughly repaired during the past year. The six-inch steam pipe in the conduit, which was leaking at the screw joints, has been taken down and reassembled, as were also the steam mains in the boiler-room. The asbestos covering on the boilers was in a dilapidated condition, but it has been repaired and is now in good condition. The return pipes in Building E and the conduit have been regraded and trapped, and the conditions in Building E are much improved.
