Sussex, 10.841; Union, 15.820; Warren, 12.354. The figures given for the counties of Essex, Hudson and Passaic are believed to approximate the true birth-rate of these districts, and the reason for the comparatively full returns from these localities is doubtless to be found in the official energy and better executive ability of the local registrars of vital statistics of the counties named. In certain other municipalities and townships of the State the returns are carefully and satisfactorily collected, but, when considered by counties, the remainder of the State does not furnish returns of births which can be relied upon. Marriages. The number of marriages recorded during the year ending June 30th, 1901, was 15,857. The following table shows a considerable increase in the number of marriages during the past three years, coincident with the prosperous condition of business throughout the State. The large number of marriages reported during the years 1886-1897 was due to the unrestricted authority contained in the laws for the performance of the marriage ceremony in the case of non-residents, and the marked decrease in marriages which occurred in 1898 was directly consequent upon the enactment of the law requiring a license in cases where both parties are non-residents of the State.
