In curls on either cheek play'd; wings he wore
Of many a colour'd plume sprinkled with gold ;
His habit fit for speed succinct; and held
Before his decent steps a silver wand.

He drew not nigh unheard; the angel bright,
Ere he drew nigh, his radiant visage turn'd,
Admonish'd by his ear; and straight was known
The archangel Uriel, one of the seven,
Who in God's presence nearest to his throne
Stand ready at command, and are his eyes

That run through all the heavens, or down to the earth

Mais d'abord l'Ennemi songe à changer sa propre forme qui pourrait autrement lui susciter péril ou retard; soudain il devient un adolescent chérubin, non de ceux du premier ordre, mais cependant tel que sur son visage souriait une céleste jeunesse, et que sur tous ses membres était répandue une grâce convenable; tant il sait bien feindre. Sous une petite couronne ses cheveux roulés en boucles se jouaient sur ses deux joues; il portait des ailes dont les plumes de diverses couleurs étaient semées de paillettes d'or; son habit court était fait pour une marche rapide, et il tenait devant ses pas pleins de décence une baguette d'argent.

Il ne s'approcha pas sans être entendu ; comme il avançait, l'Ange brillant averti par son oreille, tourna son visage radieux: il fut reconnu surle-champ par l'archange URIEL, l'un des Sept qui, en présence de DIEU et les plus voisins de son trône, se tiennent prêts à son commandement. Ces Sept Archanges sont les Yeux de l'Éternel; ils parcourent tous les cieux, ou en bas à ce globe ils portent ses prompts messages
