4 Auspicious dawn, thy rising ray,
With joy I view, and hail the day;
S.M.- Address to Missionaries. 1 YE messengers of Christ,
His sovereign voice obey,
your way. 2 The master whom you serve
Will needful strength bestow;
With sacred courage go.
And hell in vain oppose;
In spite of all his foes.
And tell his matchless grace,
Of Adam's numerous race. 5 We wish you, in his name,
The most divine success;
533. C.M.- A Missionary departing to his Station. 1 FATHER of mercies! condescend
To hear our fervent prayer,
To thy paternal care.
His various efforts bless;
And crown him with success.
3 Endow him with a heavenly mind,
Supply his every need;
But bold in word and deed. 4 In every tempting, trying hour,
Uphold him by thy grace;
Till he shall end his race.
Gather'd from heathen lands,
From his Redeemer's hands.
534. L.M.—The Waters of the Sanctuary healing the Dead Sea.
Ez. xlvii. 8,9.
Thou waterest all the worlds above;
From thine exhaustless fountain flow. 2 A sacred spring, at thy command,
From Zion's mount, in Canaan's land,
And nours its limpid stream around.
Swells to a river in its course;
And scatter blessings all the way. 4 Close by its banks, in order fair,
The blooming trees of life appear;
And on the fruit the nations live. 5 To the dead sea the waters flow,
And carry healing as they go;
6 Flow, wondrous stream, with glory crown’d,
Flow on to earth's remotest bound;
Thousands on thousands pass away!
Preach Jesus to them ere they die.
Yea, life itself, that they may live;
And what for Him will ye not do? 3 Thou Spirit of the Lord, go forth,
Call in the south, wake up the north;
And Lord of all below,
Thy Spirit give,
Let Heathens live,
And praise the Lord.
Ere all shall worship thee;
Thy power employ,
Fill earth with joy,
Thy daily stage of duty run:
To pay thy morning sacrifice.
Each present day thy last esteem;
For the great day thyself prepare. 3 In conversation be sincere;
Keep conscience, as the noon-tide, clear;
And all thy secret thoughts, surveys. 4 Wake, and lift up thyself, my heart;
And with the angels bear thy part,
High praises to the Eternal King. 5 Glory to thee, who safe hast kept,
And hast refresh'd me whilst I slept!
of endless life partake!
Scatter my sins as morning dew;
And with thyself my spirit fill,
All I design, or do, or say;
For all the blessings of the light:
2 Forgive me, Lord, for thy dear Son,
The ill that I this day have done:
I, ere I sleep, at peace may be.
The grave as little as my bed;
With joy behold the judgment day. 4 Oh may my soul on thee repose,
And with sweet sleep mine eyelids close! Sleep that may me more vigorous make,
To serve my God when I awake. 5 If in the night I sleepless lie,
My soul with heavenly thoughts supply: Let no ill dreams disturb my rest,
No powers of darkness me molest. 6 Lord, let my heart for ever share
The bliss of thy paternal care; 'Tis heaven on earth, 'tis heaven above,
To see thy face, and sing thy love. 7 Praise God from whom all blessings flow;
Praise him all creatures here below:
Hasted through the former year,
Never more to meet us here:
They have done with all below;
But how little--none can know.
