3 Thy people long this stone have tried,
And all the powers of hell defied;
Well doth this rock the house sustain. 4 When storms of wrath around prevail,
Whirlwind and thunder, fire and hail,
And here securely they abide. 5 While they that scorn this precious stone,
Fond of some quicksand of their own,
131. L.M.-Christ the Rock on which his Church is built and secured.
Matt. xvi. 18.
And challenge all her spiteful foes:
In him who from the dead arose. 2 He is the Rock on whom we rest,
And firm on that foundation stand;
His word is sure, and strong his hand. 3 Hell and its host may rage in vain;
Vain are their counsels and their power; Grim death may marshal all his train,
And boast the conquest of an hour. 4 Breathless and pale his servants lie,
And know their former place no more;
And o'er their fathers' dust adore.
And burst the barriers of the grave;
Who through eternity can save.
L.M.-Not ashamed of Christ. 1 JESUS, and shall it ever be
A mortal man ashamed of thee?
Whose glories shine through endless days. 2 Asham'd of Jesus! sooner far
Let evening blush to own her star:
O'er this benighted soul of mine. 3 Asham’d of Jesus! just as soon
Let midnight be asham'd of noon:
, Bright Morning Star! bid darkness flee. 4 Asham’d of Jesus! that dear friend
On whom my hopes of heaven depend!
That I no more revere his name. 5 Asham'd of Jesus! yes, I may, ,
When I've no guilt to wash away;
No fears to quell, no soul to save.
Till then I'll boast a Saviour slain;
L.M.-Christ's second coming. 1 THE Lord will come! the earth shall quake,
The hills their fixed seat forsake;
The stars withdraw their feeble light.
As once in lowly form he came,
3 The Lord will come! a dreadful form
With wreath of flame, and robe of storm,
Anointed Judge of human-kind.
A pilgrim on the world's highway;
O God! is this the crucified ?
Go, seek the mountain's cleft in vain!
P.M.-Christ's second Advent.
Once for favour'd sinners slain!
Rob'd in dreadful majesty;
Heaven and earth shall flee away;
“ Come to judgment!
See, in solemn pomp appear! All his saints, by man rejected,
Now shall meet him in the air!
Hallelujah! See the day of God appear! 5 Answer thine own bride and Spirit,
Hasten, Lord, the general doom! The new heaven and earth to' inherit, Take thy pining exiles home:
All creation Travails, groans, and bids thee come! 6 Yea! Amen! let all adore thee,
High on thine eternal throne!
O come quickly!
With all the dead awake,
Oil in your vessels take:
Behold the heavenly bridegroom nigh. 2 He comes, he comes to call,
The nations to his bar,
Who fit for glory are;
Lord. 3 Go meet him in the sky,
Your everlasting friend;
With all his saints ascend;
in heart, obtain the grace,
4 Ye that have here receiv'd
The unction from above;
Obedient to his love;
Rejoice with all the sanctified ! 5 Rejoice, in glorious hope
Of that great day unknown,
To stand before his throne;
And lean on our Immanuel's breast. 6 The everlasting doors
Shall soon the saints receive;
In glorious joy to live;
With God eternally shut in. 7 Then let us wait to hear
The trumpet's welcome sound; To see our Lord appear, Watching let us be found; When Jesus doth the heavens bow, Be found – as, Lord, thou find'st us now!
P.M.-Christ's second coming. 1 LIFT up your heads, ye friends of Jesus,
Partners in his sufferings here; Christ to all believers precious, Lord of lords shall soon appear:
Mark the tokens
Of the last tremendous days,
