Foreign-Office, January 13, 1837. A DISPATCH, dated the 17th December 1836, has been received by Viscount Palmerston, G. C. B. His Majesty's Principal Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, from William Smith, Esq. His Majesty's Consul at Lisbon, containing a Decree of Her Most Faithful Majesty, of which the following is a translation: (Translation.) HAVING taken into consideration the report of the Minister of Finance, I decree as follows, viz. Art 1. Mexican, Peruvian, Columbian, Bolivian, Chilian, and Buenos Ayres dollars, as well as ounces, half ounces, quarter ounces, and drachms of Spanish gold, are hereby admitted to general circulation in the province of the islands of Madeira and Porto Santo. Art. 2. The whole of those dollars are to be admitted and to pass current in all transactions and payments, both of the Treasury and of private persons, at the same value of a thousand reis, for which the Spanish dollars (patacas columnarias) pass current in that province; that is, so long as they preserve the same weight and standard as those dollars. The ounce of gold is to pass for sixteen dol dollars, and its fractional parts for a proportionate value. Art. 3. All persons rejecting the said coins will incur penalties imposed by law upon those who reject the Queen's coin. Art. 4. All legislation to the contrary is hereby revoked.
