OPINIONS OF THE PRESS.

"The British Tariff for 1846-7, has just made its appearance. Besides containing the revised list of duties payable, brought up to the present month, it furnishes a vast quantity of useful information connected with Custom-House and Mercantile business."-Times, Oct. 16, 1846.

"This useful and correctly executed compilation presents an immense mass of facts of the highest importance to Mercantile men."-Morning Chronicle, Oct. 31, 1846.

"Beedell's British Tariff' for 1847-8 has just issued from the press, and a most useful work it is; an indispensable work of reference, indeed, not only to all engaged in trading and commercial or monetary affairs, but to revenue officers, members of the legislature, and all who desire to make themselves acquainted with the order and forms of Custom-House and Mercantile business, and the mode practically in which fiscal legislation is carried out in detail. For the British Tariff' is not merely a tabular demonstration of duties levied, full and complete as that is, not only for the United Kingdom, but for many of the most important colonial dependencies as well, but it contains also abstracts of the laws for landing and passing goods through the Custom-House, with the waterside business clearly set forth, and other miscellaneous matter convenient for use."-Daily News, Aug. 30, 1847.

"This useful work contains tables of the duties payable on goods imported into, and exported from, the United Kingdom, and into the Isle of Man, the island of Mauritius, the Cape of Good Hope, the district of Natal, South Africa, Adelaide, Hobart Town, Ceylon, New Zealand, St. Helena, the British Possessions. It also contains a large amount of other interesting matter, which must render it a great acquisition to mercantile men."-Observer, Sept. 26, 1847.

"A very useful work, compiled by Mr. Edwin Beedell, of the Examiner's office, at the Custom-House, has just been published by Messrs. Baily, of Cornhill. The object of the book is to give information to all connected with the export and import trade of the empire, as to the duties they will have to pay, the forms they will have to observe, and the provisions of the several acts of parliament which they are bound to obey. There is also every knowledge requisite for the tourist and voyager; and to the general public-to those who are not required or expected by their professional duties to be acquainted with the multifarious particulars which it is necessary to observe in the transport of either person or property between this country and any other part of the world-this work must prove extremely valuable. For the merchant, however, and those who, whether engaged as principal or agent in the transfer of merchandise or passengers, it is a vade mecum which is indispensable, and the possession of it will, we may confidently assert, save its cost many hundredfold in the course of a year's transactions. The author, from his position, has the best possible opportunity of becoming acquainted with everything which it is necessary to know; and he appears to have used not only all requisite diligence in the collection of his materials, but to have put them together in a very clear and business-like manner. The book is indeed admirably compiled. It contains, in the first place, a series of the Custom-House rules respecting the baggage of passengers, the tariff of duties payable on goods imported, the list of bounties on exports, regulations respecting ships' stores, list of prohibited articles, charges for bonding and deposits under the government keeping, regulations for the intercourse between Britain and the Channel Islands, lists of all the home ports and of all the foreign ports in the world, with which any commerce exists. To all these particulars are added ample abstracts of the acts of parliament, together with a copy of all the orders that have been made for the direction of this important portion of public polity, whether drawn up by especial direction of the government or the authorities of the CustomHouse. The whole is lucidly arranged so as to be easily referred to and understood. The book is published in a convenient form and at a reasonable rate, and we are glad to see, from an array of patrons, and subscribers, that this, which is the twentyfifth year of its publication, is likely to carry the work on to increased utility and success, so as to be not only advantageous to the public, but to bring back an ample recompense to all connected with the publication."-Shipping Gazette, Sept. 9. 1847 "Bad as the times may be, no man engaged in trade can invest five shillings better than in the purchase of this most useful, accurate, and comprehensive work. We are not surprised to see that it has a most extensive list of mercantile patrons." Western Times, Sept. 18, 1847.

PREFACE.

In presenting a new edition of "The British Tariff," the compiler avails himself of the opportunity thereby afforded to tender his humble, but hearty acknowledgments to his distinguished Patrons; to the Gentlemen of the Press for their flattering testimonials; to the Principal Officers and Clerks of Her Majesty's Customs at almost every port in the United Kingdom; and to the Merchants and Traders generally, whose liberal support he has the honour thus publicly to recognise.

The present edition has been considerably extended beyond its former limits, by the insertion of important matters, including The Customs' Warehousing Act; Lists of the principal Officers of Customs at every Port, Subport, and Creek, in the United Kingdom; Lists of the Names and Stations of the Receivers of Admiralty Droits; likewise the recently-passed Act for the Warehousing of British Spirits; the North American Passengers' Act; as also a practical and comprehensive exposition of the Regulations affecting the Export branch of the Customs' business, and for which, as well as for other useful suggestions, the compiler is indebted to the practical knowledge of Mr. Francis, Searcher at this port.

Due care having been taken to secure accuracy of detail, and facility of reference-great desiderata in works of this description--the compiler respectfully and confidently submits this compendium of Customs' Laws and Practice, with a firm hope that it will be found a safe and efficient guide, and an acceptable offering to those whose countenance and support will ever be his most gratifying reward.

CUSTOM-HOUSE, London, September 26th, 1848.

EDWIN BEEDELL.
