Dhammañca Vinayañcāpi kevalam Buddhadesitam,

asaṁhirā asaṁkappa satthukappā sadā garu,
aggasantike gahetvā aggadhammā tathāgatā
agganikkhittakà therя aggaṁ akaṁsu samgahaṁ.
(b) Thite majjhantike kāli gimhānam suriyo yatha
evaṁ yakkhānaṁ ātāpo kāye thapita-dāruṇaṁ
Yatha kappa-parivatte catusuriya-ātapo
evam nisidane satthu tejo hoti tatuttari.

Yathā suriyaṁ udentaṁ na sakkā āvaritum nabhe
evaṁ nisīdanaṁ cammaṁ n'atthi avaraṇaṁ nabhe.

(d) In the county of Magadha there was a merchant who was blind of one eye.

(e) His master was much pleased with him, and rewarded him for his honesty.

(g) There is a beautiful lake in the middle of the forest. The water of the lake is clear and transparent.

1. Translate into English one of the following extracts :

(a) So Sadhu' ti tam passena nipajjāpetvā ‘Ko jānāti kiṁ p'esa karissatiti' cintetvā yathā mukhaṁ pidahituṁ na sakkati tatha tassa adhavottheca uttarottheca dandakam thapetva mukhaṁ pavisitvā aṭṭhikotim tundena pahari. Atthi patitva gatam. So atthim pētetva sihassa mukhato nikkhamanto dandakam tundena paharitvā patento nikkhamitvā sākhagge niliyi. Siho nirogo hutvā ekadivasam vanamahisaṁ vadhitvā khādati. Sakuno Vimaṁsissāmi naṁ' ti tasso uparibhāge sākhāya nilīyitvā tena saddhiṁ sallapanto pathamam gathaṁ āha.

(b) Brāhmaṇa, appamattako tava ārakkho, mayā katapāpaṁ pana mahantam balavam' ti. Brahmano elakaṁ muñcitva imam elakam kassasi pi mārctum na dassāmā' ti antevāsike ādāya eļakena eva saddhim vicari. Elako visatthamattova ekaṁ pāsāṇapittham nissāya jātagumbe givam ukkhipitvā paṇṇāni khaditum araddho. Tam khanam yeva tasmiṁ pāsāṇapitthe asani patit. Ekā pāsāṇasakalikā chijjitvā eļakassa pasĀritagīvāya patitvā sīsaṁ chindi. Mahajano sannipati. Tada Bodhisatto tasmim thōne rukkhadevatā hutva nibbatto.

TRANSLATION INTO PALI.

Translate into Pali any two of the following extracts :

(a) A certain cowherd had a daughter. When his cows had eaten up all the grass in one place he got ready to go to another. His daughter not wishing to go, said to her mother, Our hut is very pretty, and I do not wish to leave it. I will stay here.' 'Well,' said the mother, you must take care then never to open the door to strangers. I will come myself each day with food for you.'

(b) A certain old man having gathered a load of wood in a forest was carrying it to his house. After having gone some distance the old man became very tired and, having thrown down the burden from his back, he began to cry out, Oh Lord of Death, deliver me from my misery.' At that instant the Lord of Death appeared and stood before him.

(c) The next day it rained heavily. This caused great rejoicing amongst the inhabitants of the country. As the first shower fell, the people rushed out of their houses shouting with joy; for now they knew their tanks would be filled. I had already arranged for eight donkeys to carry my baggage, but owing to the rains I had to wait till the following day.

PALI GRAMMAR.

5. (a) Give the genitive and locative forms of Yo (in the feminine), ahaṁ and rājā in all the numbers.

(b) Give the feminine forms of the following words:—Bhikkhu, Miga, Hatthi, Rājā, Gacchanta, and Mahanta.

(c) Expound the samāsas in the following words-Muggarādinānāvudhahatthā, pañcavaṇṇapadumasañchannaṁ, and khantimettanuddayasampannaṁ.

(d) How many tenses are there in the Pali grammar? Name them. How many of them are actually used? Conjugate either Vasa (to dwell) or Ni (to carry) in all the tenses in the 3rd person singular.

6. Translate into English any two of the following extracts :-— (a) Atīte Bārānasīrājā akāle nikkhamitvā uyyāne khandāvāraṁ nivesesi. Tasmiṁ kāle ulūkasakuṇo veļugumbaṁ pavisitvā nilīyi. Kakasenā āgantvā ‘nikkhantam eva tam ganhissama' ti parivaresi. So suriyatthagamanaṁ anoloketvāva akālass'eva nikkhamitva palāyitum arabhi. Atha naṁ kākā parivāretvā tundehi koṭṭentā paripatesuṁ. Rājā Bodhisattaṁ amantetvā 'kim nu kho pandita ime kākā kosiyaṁ paripatenti' ti pucchi. Bodhi satto 'akale mahārāja attano vasanaṭṭhānā nikkhamantā evarūpaṁ dukkhaṁ pațilabhanti veva' ti āha.

(b) Atite Bārāṇasiyaṁ Brahmadatte rajjam kārente Bodhisatto ekasmim nigamagāme seṭṭhikule nibbattitvā vayappatto gharāvāsaṁ vasanto puttadhītāhi vaddhamāno attano puttassa Bārānasīsetthissa dhitaraṁ vāretvā divasam thapesi. Setthidhita attano gehe usabhassa sakkārasammānaṁ disvā 'ko nam'eso' ti dhatim pucchitva usabho' ti sutvā antaravithiya gacchantam ekaṁ khujjaṁ dievā ayaṁ purisusabho bhavissatī' ti sārabhaṇḍam gahetva tena saddhiṁ palāyi. Bodhisattopi kho 'setthidhitaram gehaṁ anessāmī' ti mahantena parivarena Bārāṇasim gacchanto tam eva maggaṁ paṭīpajji.

(c) Rājā mahātale camkamanto vatapānantarena Bodhisattam disvā pasīditvā ‘gaccha taṁ tāpasaṁ ānehī' ti ekaṁ amaccaṁ āṇāpesi. So gantvā vanditvā bhikkhābhājanaṁ gahetvā ‘rājā bhante tam pakkosatīti' aha. Bodhisatto 'mahapuñña, amhe rājā na jānāti' ti aha. Tena hi bhante yāvāhaṁ āgacchami tava idh'eva hothẩ' ti vatvā rañño ☎rocesi. Rājā 'gaccha tam nehi ti vatvă sayam pi vatapanena hatthaṁ pasaretva 'ito etha bhante' ti aha.
