Hilsey's Primers differ from those called Marshall's, published in 1534 and 1535, in being less hostile to Romanism, although the compiler has not scrupled to point out many objectionable passages in the Hora B. Mariæ Virginis.

A Primer or Boke of Prayers, set forth at longe, wherein are conteined the Houres of our Lady, of the Passion, and of the Holy Ghost, the vii. Psalmes, the Dirigies, with many other Prayers and ghostly Meditacions; here vnto is added the Pistles and Gospels dayly red in the Church. Lond. by Nicholas Bourman, 1540, long 12mo. The primer contains g, in twelves, besides the prefixes before the matins. Excepting a Catechism from Byddell's edition of 1535, 4to. the rest of the articles are the same as Bp. Hilsey's Manual. Lond. 1575, 8vo. This Primer contains two prayers for the Dead; and its general from the others. Of this edition there character and arrangements are different are two copies in the Bodleian. They have been regarded as different editions. The one has no title, the other no coloof 1566; the colophon to the other that of phon. The title to the one has the date 1575. The real date of both copies is that of the colophon, 1575, and the date in the title of the one copy is merely that of some other book, for which the woodcut border had been used in 1566.
