"No Public Library in the United States ought to be without a department exclusively appropriated to American Books. American Arts, Sciences, and Literature, may be said to be in their infancy, but from all appearances in no great length of time they will assume an important and perhaps a preponderating influence in the career of human progress. Commerce, foreign and domestic, is spreading and augmenting with a rapidity unprecedented. Agricul ture, manufacture, fishing, and mining, present a degree of activity and prosperity that throws into the shade the fables of antiquity. Rail-roads have been extended and spread over the country, like cob-webs; canals have connected seas and lakes, forming chains of water communication for thousands of miles-a task at one time thought impossible; the telegraph wires conveying intelligence from one end of the Union to the other, in a few hours. To swell the tide, thousands upon thousands of the hardiest peasantry and artisans of Europe, are daily landing upon the American shores. Then to a people aspiring to govern themselves, the great sheet anchor of their safety is the education of the masses; and this can be effected only by and through books. If men are only true to themselves and their posterity, what must sult."-Western Memorabilia.
