John Clayton, the eminent Virginian Botanist, came to America in 1705, then 20 years of age. His father was Attorney-General of Virginia, and he was Clerk of Gloucester County for 51 years. During his old age he made a CONGRESSIONAL GLOBE, and Appendix, botanical tour through Orange county, and it is believed, he visited most if not all the settled parts of Virginia. His residence was about 20 miles from Williamsburgh. He was a man of high moral character, as well as an esteemed Naturalist.
