CASE No. 1356. E. M. Burst, State's Attorney. Case against F. E. Wells, Genoa, on complaint of selling illegal lemon extract. Witnesses-Doggett and Kjellquist. Chemist-L. Doggett. Pending. CASE No. 1357. R. C. Neff, State's Attorney. Case against H. Ermovick, Pana, on complaint of selling illegal pepper. Witnesses-Doggett and Hamlin. Chemist-L. Doggett As will be seen from the above table of cases, there have been fines reported by the State's attorneys to the amount of $3,000, and this amount, as the department understands, has been paid into the State Treasurer by the State's attorneys of the various counties in which the fines have been assessed. We have reports from State's attorneys of cases settled but as yet no reports of fines having been paid to them, which in addition to the above would swell the fines to about $4,500. Numerous State's attorneys have not reported at all, so in the opinion of the commissioner there has been paid to the State's attorneys and justices of the peace of the various counties of the State over $5,000 during the present year and same should have been paid to the State Treasurer, if it has not been, by them. Number of suits brought. Fines collected..... RECAPITULATION. Fines in the hands of States' attorneys unreported (estimated) Total (estimated).. 350 $3,000 00 1,500 00 500 00 $5,000 00 The commissioner wishes to state in regard to the above suits, fines. etc., that no fines have been paid to him or to any member of the food department; but all fines have been paid either to justices of the peace before whom suits were brought, or if in the courts of record, to the State's attorneys, and the same remitted to the State Treasurer, or if not, should have been remitted. |
