Hymn.

Death and Resurrection.

HE dies! the Friend of sinners dies
Lo! Salem's daughters weep around:
A solemn darkness veils the skies,

A sudden trembling shakes the ground.

2 Come, saints! and drop a tear or two
For Him who groan'd beneath your load;
He shed a thousand drops for you,
A thousand drops of richer blood.

3 Here's love and grief beyond degree,
The LORD of Glory dies for men!
But, lo! what sudden joys we see!
JESUS, the dead, revives again!

4 The rising GOD forsakes the tomb,
Up to His FATHER'S court He flies;
Cherubic legions guard Him home,

And shout Him welcome to the skies!

5 Break off your tears, ye saints, and tell
How high our great Deliv'rer reigns;
Sing how he spoil'd the hosts of hell,
And led the monster, Death, in chains!

6 Say, "Live, for ever, wondrous King,

"Born to redeem, and strong to save!" Then ask the monster, "Where's thy sting? "And where's thy vict'ry, boasting grave?"

Hymn.

Resurrection of Christ.

1 YE humble souls, that seek the LORD,
Chase all your fears away;
And bow with pleasure down to see
The place where JESUS lay.

2 Thus low the LORD of life was brought;
Such wonders love can do:
Thus cold in death that bosom lay,
Which throbb'd, and bled for you.

3 A moment give a loose to grief;
Let grateful sorrows rise,
And wash the bloody stains away
With torrents from your eyes.

4 Then raise your eyes, and tune your songs, The SAVIOUR lives again:

Not all the bolts and bars of death
The conq'ror could detain.

5 High o'er th' angelic bands He rears
His once dishonour'd head;
And through unnumber'd years He reigns,
Who dwelt among the dead.

6 With joy like His shall ev'ry saint
His empty tomb survey;

Then rise with His ascending LORD
Through all His shining way.

Hymn.

Resurrection of Christ.

1 "CHRIST, the LORD, is ris'n to-day!” Sons of men and angels say;

Raise your joys and triumphs high,
Sing, ye heav'ns; and, earth, reply:
Love's redeeming work is done,
Fought the fight, the battle won:
Lo! the sun's eclipse is o'er;
Lo! he sets in blood no more.

2 Vain the stone, the watch, the seal,
CHRIST hath burst the gates of hell:
Death in vain forbids His rise,
CHRIST hath open'd paradise:
Lives again our glorious King!
"Where, O Death, is now thy sting?"
Once he died our souls to save;
"Where's thy vict'ry, boasting Grave?"
3 Soar we now where CHRIST has led,
Foll'wing our exalted head:

Made like Him, like Him we rise;
Our's the cross, the grave, the skies:
What though once we perish'd all,
Partners of our parents' fall?
Second life we all receive,

In our heav'nly Adam live.

4 Hail, Thou LORD of earth and heav'n! Praise to Thee by both be giv'n!

Thee we greet triumphant now;
Hail, the RESURRECTION-Thou!
King of Glory! Soul of bliss!
Everlasting life is this-

Thee to know, Thy pow'r to prove;
Thus to sing, and thus to love.

Hymn.

Resurrection of Christ.

THE LORD is ris'n indeed!

And are the tidings true?
Yes, we beheld the SAVIOUR bleed,
And saw Him living too.

The LORD is ris'n indeed!
Then justice asks no more:
Mercy and truth are now agreed,
Which stood oppos'd before.

The LORD is ris'n indeed!

Then is His work perform'd:
The captive surety now is freed,
And death, our foe, disarm'd.

The LORD is ris'n indeed!
Then hell has lost it's prey;

"

With Him is ris'n the ransom'd seed,
To reign in endless day.

The LORD is ris'n indeed!

He lives to die no more;

He lives the sinner's cause to plead,

Whose curse and shame He bore.

6 Then swell your triumphs high'r," Praise Him by all ador'd,

And join the bright celestial choir,
To sing out ris'n' LORD.`

Hymn.

Resurrection of Christ improved.

1 YE faithful souls, who JESUS know, If ris'n indeed with Him ye are, Superior to the joys below,

His Resurrection's pow'r declare.

2 Your faith by holy tempers prove;
By actions show your sins forgiv'n;
And seek the glorious things above,
And follow CHRIST your Head to heav'n.
3 There your exalted SAVIOUR see,
Seated at GOD's right hand again,
In all His FATHER's majesty,
In everlasting pomp to reign.

4 To Him continually aspire,

Contending for your native place:
And emulate the angel-choir,
And only live to love and praise!

Hymn.

Resurrection of Christ.

BLEST be the everlasting GOD,

The FATHER of our LORD! Be His abounding mercy prais'd, His Majesty ador'd!

2 When from the dead He rais'd His Son, And call'd Him to the sky,

He gave our souls a lively hope

That they should never die.
